WHAT IS
‘teaching’?
In education, teaching is the concerted
sharing of knowledge and experience,
which is usually organized within a
discipline and, more generally, the
provision of stimulus to the psychological
and intellectual growth of a person by
another person or artifact.
How they see themselves:
 Actors
 Orchestral Conductors
 Gardeners

According to the Cambridge International Dictionary of

English “teaching means to give (someone) knowledge
or to instruct or train (someone)”.

According to the Prophet by Kahlil Gibran. “ If the

teacher is indeed wise,” Gibran writes, ‘he does not bid
you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather leads you
to the threshold of you own minds’ (Gibran 1991:766)
In the classroom
the point is that we should be able to adopt a
variety of roles within the classroom that facilitate
learning. some of these roles come naturally to the
most teacher, while others have to be thought about
more carefully.

RESOURCE
TUTOR
 The most common teacher role
 They are in charge of the class and the
activities
 Teachers fronted-classroom CONTROLLE
 Teacher takes the roll, tells students
things, organizes drills, and reads
aloud.
R
Disadvantages

Cuts down on opportunities for student to
speak.
Lacks on variety in activities and classroom
atmosphere
PROMPTER

 Teachers should be able to

motivate their students.
 Teachers need to do it
sensitively and encouragingly,
Disadvantages
but with discretion
 The point is not to take charge
of the stage but to encourage the  If teacher are too adamant they
student to think independently risk initiative away from the
students.
 If teachers are to retiring they
may not supply the right amount
of encouragement.
- Participant

 Teachers may want to join in an activity

not as teachers, but as a participant in
their own right.
 For the teacher, participating in an
activity is more enjoyable than acting as a
resource.
 Students will enjoy having the teacher
with them.
 BE CAREFUL! IT MAY BE UNFAIR.
Resource
o No teacher know everything about the language.
o If you don’t know the answer, guide the student as to
where they can look for information
o Encourage students to use resource materials for
themselves.
o No need to answer each question, direct students to
use dictionaries,
o Don’t show hesitation or fear, students will lose
confidence in teachers.
Tutor
 Teachers work with individuals or small groups.

 Pointing students in directions they have not yet

thought of taking.

 The term implies a more intimate relationship

than that of the controller or organizer.

 Teachers will allow more personal contact and a

real chance for students to be supported and
helped.
03 Organizing
Teacher as an Organiser
students and  Engage

activities The first we need to do when organizing something is to get the

student involved, engaged, and ready.
 Initiate

To sum up: Then it is time for us to start or initiate the activity. At this point,
students probably need to know how much time they have got
Engage > Instruct(demonstrate) and what exactly should start.
> Initiate > Organize feedback  Organize feedback
Finally, we stop the activity when the students have finished
and/or when other factors indicate that it is time to stop. This
might be because the students are bored or because some pairs or
groups have already finished before the others( see Chapter 10,
B4) Perhaps the lesson is coming to the end and we want to give
some summarizing comments. At this point, it is vital to organize
some kind of feedback
The teacher as Performer
o Different teachers perform
differently
o Each teacher has many different
performance styles depending on the
situation
o Besides, we should describe how
teachers should play their roles :

Activity How the teacher should perform

1. Team game Energetically, encouragingly, clearly, fairly

2. Role-play Encouragingly, retiringly, supportively

3. Teacher reading Commandingly, dramatically, interstingly

aloud
4. whole-class Efficiently, clearly, supportivelly
listening
