Seismologists

Seismologist

Study earthquakes by going out and looking at

the damage caused by the earthquakes and by
using SEISMOGRAPHS.
Seismographs
Seismology

It studies earthquakes and seismic waves that

move around the earth.
Seismic Waves

Are the waves of energy caused by the sudden

breaking of rock within the earth or an
explosion.
Main Parts of Seismic
Waves

BODY SURFACE
WAVES WAVES
Body Waves

Traveling through the interior of the earth,

body waves arrive before the surface waves
emitted by an earthquake
Surface Waves

Traveling only through the crust, surface

waves are of a lower frequency than body
waves and are easily distinguished on a
seismogram as a result.
Prospecting

is the first stage of the geological analysis, a physical

search for hydrocarbons, minerals, fossils, precious
metals, or mineral specimens, and is also known as
fossicking
Geophysical Prospecting

Is the study of the structure of the earth’s crust by

physical methods for the location and the surveying of
minerals, it is an integral part of geophysics.
Seismic Prospecting

A method of geophysical prospecting in which

vibrations are set up by firing small explosive charges
in the ground or by other artificial sources.
Types of Seismic
Waves
Shear/
Compressional/ Transverse/ Surface Waves (L
Longitudinal/ SURFACE
Secondary Waves Wave)
Primary Waves
WAVES
Motion of the particles in a
medium is parallel to direction
of propagation of the wave.

Primary Waves
The motion of the particles in
a medium is perpendicular to
the direction of propagation of
the wave.

Secondary Waves
Surface waves (L-waves) are
analogous to water waves and
travel along the Earth's surface. it
is of two type, Rayleigh and
Love.
