Feasibility Analysis and System
proposal
This module introduces the concept of Feasibility Analysis and Systems proposal.
At the end of the module students will be able to:
(i) explain feasibility analysis of proposed systems
(ii) explain the checkpoints for system feasibility analysis
(iii) explain six tests for feasibility
(iv) explain system proposal

What is Feasibility Analysis
• Feasibility refers to the measure of how a beneficial and useful the proposed
system would be to a business entity.
• Feasibility Analysis: is the process of determining or measuring the
feasibility of a system.
• Feasibility analysis must be done in life time of a system development because
the scope and complexity of a system may change after the initial problems
and opportunities have been fully analysed.
• This has brought about the need for checkpoints at phases of system analysis
namely:
• System analysis-scope definition checkpoint: urgency and the development cost of the
• System analysis-problem analysis checkpoint
• System design-decision analysis checkpoint
Checkpoints for System Feasibility
Analysis
• System analysis-scope definition checkpoint: urgency and
the estimate of development cost for system
• System analysis-problem analysis checkpoint: this is done
when the problems in existing system are better
determined. Because the development cost will be better
determined.
• System design-decision analysis checkpoint: this is the
major feasibility analysis activity because at this stage the
problems and requirements would have been determined.
Alternate solutions are defined in terms of their
input/output methods, data storage methods, hardware and
software requirements, and processing methods.

Options for Checkpoints
Typical range of options that could be considered in System
design-decision analysis checkpoint are:
• Do nothing
• Re-engineer manual business processes (not computer-
based processes)
• Enhance existing computer processes
• Purchase packaged application
• Design and construct a new computer-based system.

Six Tests for Feasibility
There are six(6) categories of feasibility tests:
• Operational feasibility: measure of how well a solution meets the
identified system requirements to solve problems.
• Cultural (or political ) feasibility: measure of how well people feel and
acceptable the solution will be in an organization.
• Technical feasibility: is the measure of practicality of a specific technical
solution and the available technical resources and expertise to implement
and maintain it.
• Schedule feasibility: measure of how reasonable the project timetable is
• Economic feasibility: measure of how cost-effective the project or
solution is
• Legal feasibility: measure of how well a solution can be implemented
within the existing legal and contractual obligations.

System proposal
Recommending a solution is usually preceded by a decision analysis stage
where candidate solutions are identified, analyzing, and compared so as to
choose the overall best:
Recommending a solution involves producing the system proposal, which is
usually in form of a written report or oral presentation. System proposal is a
report or presentation of a recommended solution.
• Written report: is a written document to communicate recommended
solution to users. Length of written report and Organization of the report
should be given considerations.
• Formal presentation: is a special meeting used to sell new ideas and gain
approval for a new system.
