SOCIETY
MEMBERS:
Gender issues include all aspects and concerns related to women's and men's lives and situation in society,
to the way they interrelate, their differences in access to and use of resources, their activities, and how they
react to changes, interventions and policies
WOMEN STILL STRUGGLE for equal rights around the world — and considering patriarchy's deep-seated roots
in human history, it's no wonder. In China, gender inequality may have its seeds in the Bronze Age more than
2,500 years ago, according to a recent study from Queens College in New York City
Gender-related judicial integrity issues take many forms, including sextortion, sexual harassment, sexual
discrimination, gender bias, unequal gender representation, gender stereotyping, or inappropriate sexual
conduct
PHYSICAL VIOLENCE
Family violence is a pattern of abusive behaviour in an intimate or family relationship where one person
assumes a position of power over another and causes fear. Family violence (also called domestic violence)
takes many forms: it can be physical, sexual, psychological, emotional, economic, spiritual or legal abuse
Physical abuse is when an abuser uses physical force against another person in a way that injures the person or puts them at
risk of being injured. Physical abuse ranges from physical restraint to murder. Some examples are:
• Grabbing, pinching, shoving, slapping, hitting, biting, arm-twisting, kicking, stabbing, shooting, pushing, throwing,
kicking, punching, beating, tripping, battering, bruising, choking, shaking.
• Holding, restraining, confining.
• Breaking bones.
• Assaulting with a weapon, such as a knife or gun.
• Burning.
• Stopping a person from having what they need for their health, such as medication, medical care or hygienic assistance.
• Forcing a person to drink alcohol or take drugs.
SEXUAL VIOLENCE
Sexual violence Involves forcing or enticing a child or young person to take part in sexual activities, not necessarily
involving a high level of violence, whether or not the child is aware of what is happening.
The activities may involve physical contact, including assault by penetration (for example, rape or oral sex) or non-
penetrative acts such as masturbation, kissing, rubbing and touching outside of clothing. They may also include
non-contact activities, such as involving children in looking at, or in the production of, sexual images, watching
sexual activities, encouraging children to behave in sexually inappropriate ways, or grooming a child in preparation
for abuse.
• Sexual abuse can take place online, and technology can be used to facilitate offline abuse.
• Sexual abuse is not solely perpetrated by adult males. Women can also commit acts of sexual abuse, as can
other children.'
• Sexual abuse often occurs in conjunction with the other categories of child abuse especially emotional abuse in
order to maintain control and secrecy.
There is no single agreed definition of Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) within the family environment (also known
as Intra-familial Child Sexual Abuse), but in addition to abuse by a relative (such as a parent, sibling or uncle),
it may also include abuse by someone close to the child in other ways (such as a step-parent, a close family
friend or a babysitter).
Sexual abuse often occurs in conjunction with the other categories of child abuse especially emotional abuse
in order to maintain control and secrecy.
Children from the age of birth onwards may be subjected to sexual abuse. Sexual abuse can have a long-term
impact on emotional, social and educational development and is linked to the development of mental health
issues in later life.
PHYSICAL/EMOTIONAL ABUSE
Emotional abuse is any abusive behavior that isn't physical, which may include verbal
aggression, intimidation, manipulation, and humiliation, which most often unfolds as a
pattern of behavior over time that aims to diminish another person's sense of identity, dignity
and self worth, and which often results in anxiety,
IMPACT OF VIOLENCE IN CHILDREN
Violence can result in physical injury, sexually transmitted infections, anxiety, depression,
suicidal thoughts, unplanned pregnancy and even death. Evidence also suggests that toxic
stress associated with violence in early childhood can permanently impair brain development
and damage other parts of the nervous system.
GENDER ISSUES
IN SCHOOL
BULLYING
What Is Bullying?
Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived
power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Both kids who are
bullied and who bully others may have serious, lasting problems.
An Imbalance of Power: Kids who bully use their power—such as physical strength, access to embarrassing
information, or popularity—to control or harm others. Power imbalances can change over time and in different
situations, even if they involve the same people.
Repetition: Bullying behaviors happen more than once or have the potential to happen more than once.
Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or
verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.
SEXUAL VIOLENCE
Sexual violence
Sexual violence is any sexual act or attempt to obtain a sexual act by violence or coercion,
acts to traffic a person or acts directed against a person's sexuality, regardless of the
relationship to the victim.
Different types of gender based harassment in school
Gender-based harassment in schools is often used as a form of bullying. This seems to
happen regularly in primary, middle and high school. Students may use sexual information to
gain control and power over another person.
DISADVANTAGE GROUPS
Groups of persons that experience a higher risk of poverty, social exclusion, discrimination
and violence than the general population, including, but not limited to, ethnic minorities,
migrants, people with disabilities, isolated elderly people and children.
