What is Sling Psychometer???
A sling psycho-meter consists of two thermometers.
One is a wet bulb and the other is a dry bulb.
To make a wet-bulb thermometer, wrap a piece of white,
porous cloth (a hollow white shoelace is ideal) which has
been soaked in water around the bulb of one of the thermo-
meters and secure it with a rubber band or twine.
IMPORTANCE!!!
A psychometer is an instrument used to determine the air's
moisture quantity; this usually determine the dew point and the
relative humidity.
There are numerous techniques that this quantity could be
measured.
The basic is common and traditional, is to utilize a dry bulb and
a wet bulb thermometer in combination.
The psychometer or diagnostic measuring device is used
for indoor climate and environmental monitoring.
In addition to measuring relative humidity and ambient room /
dry-bulb temperature, the psychometer calculates dew-point and
wet-bulb temperatures in degrees Celsius (°C) and Fahrenheit
(°F).
Working of Psychometer
The amount of evaporative cooling on the psychometer’s wet bulb is
proportional to the amount of moisture in the air.
Drier air absorbs more moisture from the bulb, which causes it to cool down
faster.
The temperature does not change as much because the warmer air cannot retain
as much water from the bulb.
Much information about atmospheric conditions, such as humidity, air
temperature, surface temperature, and dew point, can be shown on a digital
screen at once.
However, these devices must be calibrated to local conditions for 20 to 30
minutes before use, and the wet bulb sensor will dry out if not used for a
prolonged period of time.
As a result, despite needing a little more legwork on the part of the user, the
good old manual psychrometer retains its appeal.
They would use a psychrometric chart to determine the final humidity reading
after reading both bulb temperatures.
Principle of Sling Psychometer
A psychometer measures humidity by taking both a wet-
bulb and a dry-bulb temperature reading.
With those two values known, the other properties of the
air, including its moisture content, can be determined by
computation or by reading a psychometric chart.
If the surrounding air is relatively dry, more moisture will
evaporate from the wet bulb, and the drop in temperature
will be higher.
If the air is more humid, evaporation will be less, and the
fall in temperature will be lower.
APPLICATIONS
It is used for checking humidity level in air-conditioned
rooms and installations.
It is used to set and check hair hygrometer.
It is used in the measurement range of 0 to 100% RH.
It is used for measuring wet bulb temperature between
0’C to 180’C.
LIMITATIONS
1. The measured medium is altered due to the act of
measurement. The evaporation process in the wet bulb
will add moisture to the air.
2. Can not be used in situations of automation
requirements.
3. Can not be used for continuous recording purposes.
4. If the wick is covered with dirt, the wick will harden
and its water absorption capacity will be reduced.
