ELECTROLYTE

SENSOR
Amogh Morje, Kevin Fuentes, Evan Liao
Background Goal:

I. Our goal for this project was to build an

electrolyte sensor

II. Created an electrical conductivity meter

using arduino and measured conductivity
of different solutions

III. Electrical current flows between the two

electrodes inside the probe, and
increases/decreases with
increasing/decreasing ion concentration.
Experimental Design
- Measured the conductivity of three separate
solutions: Gatorade, Similac and Red Bull

- We measured Deionized water as a negative

control

- We compared the acquired experimental data

across the different solutions, then to
expected literature values of solutions
conductivity
Hardware Setup
Device consisted of PC, Arduino, and
conductivity sensor

Supplemental materials supplied from Getir

Hardware Setup Cont.

top: Arduino hardware setup

right: conductivity probe setup during
calibration
Data Collection
- Probe placed in liquid until reading leveled out (~90 seconds)
- Three trials done per liquid

bottom: sample readout on computer display

Conclusion
Our project looked to create a measurement tool that could provide
insightful data on the commercial products we consume in our everyday
lives.
Average Conductivity of
Solutions across three trials

Similac: 2.18 mS/cm

Gatorade: 1.34 mS/cm

Red Bull: 0.60 mS/cm

P-value: 4.25 e-7

WE’RE SIGNIFICANT
Things to improve…
● First, try to simulate a vacuum sealed environment to avoid gas leaks or the formation of bubbles on the
perimeter of the probe to prevent the disturbance of signal to the probe

● Try a greater variety of solutions to get a more diverse data set and further prove the applicability of our project

● Standardize or normalize the ions we’re considering as conducting. There are many ions or minerals that we
could not confirm contributed to the actual conductivity picked up by the sensor which made it difficult to
acquire expected values for our experiment
