INTRODUCTION
Generally the density of normal
(conventional) concrete is 2400 kg/m3.
These density of concrete is not
sufficient for heavy loading structures
and radiation emitting structures.
In order to use the concrete under
extreme loads and shielding works the
density must be high so that its strength
will be high.
So, the concrete which has high density
nearly 3360 to 3840 kg/m3 is known as “High
Density Concrete” or “Heavy Weight
Concrete”.
The density of heavy weight concrete can be
obtained maximum up to 5200 to 6000
kg/m3 by using steel or iron shots as both
fine and coarse aggregates.
PROPERTIES OF HIGH DENSITY
CONCRETE
The strength of this concrete measured on
standard cylinders has been found 42 MPa
at 28 days for a water/cement ratio 0.58
and 24 MPa at water/cement ratio 0.9.
The coefficient of thermal expansion of
barite concrete measured in the range of
temperature of 4°C to 38°C is found about
twice that of normal concrete.
Shrinkage of high density concrete is about
1/4 to 1/3 of the normal concrete.
AGGREGATES USED IN HIGH
DENSITY CONCRETE
Aggregates having density of 3.5 to 4.0 and
higher can be used.
Commonly used aggregates are,
Hematite,
Barite,
Magnetite etc..,.
Artificial aggregates called steel or iron
shots can be used to get higher densities.
Steel shots
USES
They can be used for shielding works for
radio active radiation and X-Rays
emitting structures in order to safeguard
their personnel.
They can be used for massive concrete
projects.
Precast blocks.
Bridge counterweights.
Ballast for ocean vessels.
ADVANTAGES
Initial and maintenance cost is not that
much high for the service it gives.
The duration or life period is high.
Strength of this concrete is so high.
They can be moulded into any required
shape.
DISADVANTAGES
Heavy weight.
Requires more space.
CONCLUSION
So, the high density concrete can
withstand under heavy loading
conditions as its density is high.
In modern days its importance is
increasing day by day due to its
beneficiable characteristics.
