The history of Psychology
• Psychology is a relatively young science with its experimental roots
in the 19th century, compared, for example, to human physiology,
which dates much earlier. As mentioned, anyone interested in
exploring issues related to the mind generally did so in a
philosophical context prior to the 19th century.
• Psychology as a field of experimental study began in 1854 in
Leipzig, Germany when Gustav Fechner created the first theory of
how judgments about sensory experiences are made and how to
experiment on them.
Psychology aims & purpose
• Psychology, as science has basically the following main
aims or goals: understand, predict, describe, influence,
and control behavior, and improve the quality of life.
• To sum up, psychology is centered on four major goals: to
describe, explain, predict, and change or control
behaviors. These goals are the foundation of most theories
and studies in an attempt to understand the cognitive,
emotional, and behavioral processes that people face in
their daily lives.
Psychology importance
• Essentially, psychology helps people in large part because
it can explain why people act the way they do. With this
kind of professional insight, a psychologist can help people
improve their decision making, stress management and
behavior based on understanding past behavior to better
predict future behavior.
The science of psychology benefits society and enhances our
lives. Psychologists examine the relationships between brain
function and behavior, and the environment and behavior,
applying what they learn to illuminate our understanding and
improve the world around us.
