Guidance systems and it's
origin
Missile guidance refers to a variety of methods of guiding a missile or
a guided bomb to its intended target. The missile's target accuracy is
a critical factor for its effectiveness. Guidance systems improve
missile accuracy by improving its "Single Shot Kill Probability"
The concept of missile guidance originated at least as early as World
War I, with the idea of remotely guiding an airplane bomb onto a
target
Missile vs Guided
Bombs
Missiles and guided bombs generally use similar types
of guidance system, the difference between the two
being that missiles are powered by an onboard engine,
whereas guided bombs rely on the speed and height of
the launch aircraft for propulsion.
COMPONENTS OF
MISSILE
1.Warhead:-
It contains all the explosives.Types
of warhead
Explosive: An explosive is used to
disintegrate the target using a shockwave.
Chemical: A toxic chemical is dispersed which
is used to kill humans.
Biological: An infectious agent is dispersed.
Nuclear: A runaway nuclear fusion or fission
causes immense enery release and
2.Fusing:
It includes those devices and arrangements that cause
-
the missile's payload to function in proper relation to
the target i.e, it makes the warhead to explode properly.
There are two general types:
Proximity fuses: A proximity fuse is a fuse that explodes
an explosive device automatically when the distance to
the target becomes smaller than a predetermined value.
Contact fuses: This type of fuses causes the explosion
when it hits or comes in contact with any hard surfaces.
3.Guidance
The system which is responsible to locate the target
System:-
and guide the missile. There are two types of
guidance systems:
Fire and Forget:
Fire-and-forget is a type of missile guidance which does not require further
external intervention after launch such as illumination of the target or wire
guidance, and can hit its target without the launcher being in line-of-sight of
the target.
Another method is to use a TV
camera ,using either visible light or infra
red in order to see the target.
Working Principle
Tracking:-
To track the missile by knowing the location of the target
and using a guidance system.
Guidance system:-
Guides the missile to the target.Commands are
transmitted by radar ,radio, or laser impulses. Two
guidance systems are used: One in the missile & other at
the launch site
Flight Control
System:-
For navigating missile and maintaining an
accurate flight path.

Warhead:-
Contains all explosives.

Engine/Propulsion system:-
The engine propels the missile from the
launch site to the target

Surface to Air missile

Surface to Underwater missile
2.Based on range:

range Intermediate range
Intercontinental range

CONCLUSION
missile, Rocket-propelled weapon designed to deliver an explosive
warhead with great accuracy at high speed. Missiles vary from small
tactical weapons effective out to only a few hundred feet to much larger
strategic weapons with ranges of several thousand miles. They were not
developed in any significant way until after World War II. Almost all
contain some form of guidance and control mechanism and are
therefore often called guided missiles. An unguided military missile, as
well as any launch vehicle used to penetrate the upper atmosphere or
place a satellite in space, is usually called a rocket. A propeller-driven
underwater missile is called a torpedo, and a guided missile powered
along a low, level flight path by an air-breathing jet engine is called a
cruise missile. With the development of ICBMs, missiles became central
to Cold War strategy. See also antiballistic missile, Minuteman missile, V-
1 missile, V-2 missile.
