STRUCTURE
USE
Affirmative We use this tense to show that one
S + had + past participle + (C) past event happened before another. It
She had left the house before they arrived is often used with verbs of thinking
like think, know, be sure…
Negative
Ex. I thought I’d seen the film before
S + hadn’t + past participle + (C)
She hadn’t left the house before they arrived
Questions
Had + S + past participle + (C)?
Had she left the house?

Affirmative It is used to emphasise the duration of
S + had + been + -ing + (C) a past action which happened before
She had been watering the plants the whole afternoon another one
Negative
S + hadn’t + been + -ing + (C)
She hadn’t been watering the plants!
Questions
Had + S + been + -ing + (C)?
Had she been watering the plants?
