How a coloum can be retrofitted in an RC structure

Explain three methods of coloum Jacketing

Jacketing of columns
• Concrete is added with longitudinal and transverse reinforcement
around the existing columns
• Improves axial and shear strength of columns while the fluxural
strength of column and beam-column joint are same
• It improves the lateral load capacity of ductility
• General methods of column Jacketing are:
• Reinforced Concrete Jacketing
• Steel Jacketing
• FRP Jacketing
Reinforced Concrete Jacketing
• Damaged regions should be repaired before Jacketing
• Main purpose of column Jacketing are
• To improve columns flexural strength
• Increase in shear capacity of column , strong column –weak beam design
• It is done by passing longitudinal reinforcement through holes drilled in the slab
and placing new concrete in the beam column joints
• Rehabilitated sections are designed in this way so that the flexural strength of
coloum should be greater than that of the beam
Details
Properties of Jacketing : Match with the existing structure
Compressive strength > = existing structure by 5N/mm2
Minimum width of jacket : 10 cm – concrete cast in place ; 4cm – shortcrete
Monolithic behaviour
Narrow gap to prevent increases in flexural capacity
Min area of longitudinal : 3A/fy
Spacing should not exceed 6 times the width of the jacket
% of steel in the jacket w.r.t the jacket area should be limited between
0.015 and 0.04
Min area of transverse : Designed and spaced
minimum bar dia used for ties is not less than 10 mm
The ties should have 135 degree hooks
Due to the difficulty of manufacturing 135 degree hooks on the field

, ties made up of multiple pieces can be used .

Shear stress in the interface : Provide adequate shear transfer monolithic
Relative movement between the jacket
and the existing element should be
prevented
chipping the concrete cover of the original member
and roughening its surface may improve the bond
between the old and new concrete.
1,2,3 side jacket – special reinforcement should be
provided to enhance a monolithic behaviour.
Steel Jacketing
Local strengthening of columns has been frequently accomplished by jacketing with steel plates .
• Steel plate thickness : atleast 6mm .
• Height of the jacket : flexural columns -1.2-1.5 times splice length.Shear columns full height of the
column
• Shape of the jacket : * Rectangular jacketing , prefabricated two L-shaped panels.
* The use of rectangular jacket has been successful in case of small size
columns upto 36 inch width but has been less successful on larger
rectangular columns ,rectangular jackets appear to be incapable to provide
adequate confinement.
• Bottom confinement: 38 mm inch
• Gap between steel jacket and concrete column :25 mm( 1 inch ) fill with cementatious grout .
• Size of anchor belt :25 mm in dia. Bolts are installed through pre drilled holes.
• No of anchor bolts : two anchor bolts are intended to stiffen the steel jacket and improve confinement of the spilce
