APPLICATION OF STEEL
JACKET
• Steel jacketing appear to be promising as a
strengthening technique for increasing beam and
column shear capacity and ductility.

• Steel angles or plates are utilized to confine the

column’s concrete in a variety of forms.

• The RC section is made larger by welding or

attaching it to a steel section, with grout filling the
space left between the steel and concrete
Advantages
• Steel is widely available in the market.

• It is claimed to have good confinement,

which significantly increases both strength
and ductility.

Disadvantages
• In steel plate jacketing the evident
drawbacks are expensive in labor.

• Steels are exposed and prone to rusting and

corrosion.
Structural Analysis

• Steel plate jacketing of ground floor

columns enhanced the seismic performance
of the soft story model up to 0.30g PGA

• Steel angles covering 1/3 of each column’s

length above and below each joint (to
increase flexural capacity), covering the
whole length of columns (to increase axial
strength), and stiffened plates for RC beams
are all part of the proposed retrofitting
scheme.
Testing and Results

• Axial & Flexural

• Compressive strength
• Lateral strength
• Ductility
• Concrete strength
• Seismic drift

• Brick infills
• 0.3g PGA
• 0.36g PGA
Summary/Synthesis

Adding an additional jacket layer could reduce the required seismic

force, provide the required transverse reinforcement, and improve
seismic performance by adding more ductility. The main component of
the steel jacketing is steel, which is easily accessible and available in the
market. On the other hand, costly labor is one of the weaknesses of
steel jacketing.
According to of Zerin et al., (2016), as a result, the soft story model's
seismic performance was improved by steel jacketing of the ground floor
columns up to 0.30 g PGA, but it collapsed at 0.36 g with the start of first
floor column failures as a result of the growing vertical stiffness
irregularity between the retrofitted ground floor and the unretrofitted
upper floors.
Research Gap

• Contrary to reinforced concrete, there are only a

restricted number of welders trained for steel
jacketing.

• Steel is prone to corrosion.

• Advanced natural fiber composites are commonly

produced for building beams and columns ,
gradually replacing traditional steel plates or steel
jackets.
