there are pieces like the one done by Shilo. She worked with an NGO called Sewing New
Futures, which works in Najafgarh, Delhi, an area where a lot of women are forced into
prostitution by their families. The organization works with these women to empower them
with alternative sources of livelihood. Shilo worked with the young girls there, and their
stories became the inspiration behind the project.

We did a wall in collaboration with the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan [Clean India Mission]
and I remember speaking to one person who told me about a man who had stopped
his car and was about to urinate on a wall when a few local people strongly objected
saying, “someone’s taken the effort of painting this beautiful thing. Don’t dirty it, just
go to a public toilet.” So the impact could be simple, maybe it just makes you feel
better or it distracts you or it makes you think, but it could also have deeper
meanings of community building or keeping the neighborhood clean.

Where is Shoreditch?

in Shoreditch, London
Shoreditch is a neighborhood in East London. Before East
London experienced its renaissance, it was a lower income
neighborhood known for its immigrant populations. But
towards the late 20th century, the counterculture thrived and
more positive associations were being made with the area.
Shoreditch was suddenly less “dodgy”, and more “edgy”.
Spurred on by the East London line extension in 2005 which
introduced the Shoreditch High Street station, and the Silicon
Roundabout Regeneration which made East London a
technology hub, Shoreditch quickly became the place to be.

A Couple Holding Hands in the Street’ by Stik on Princelet

Voted one of Britain’s favourite pieces of art in 2017.
Stik’s beautifully simplistic work is a commentary on
social cohesion. Brick Lane is a culturally diverse area
which has seen racism and discrimination in the past.
‘A Couple Holding Hands in the Street’ reminds us
that we are all human and is a much loved local piece.
A long standing piece. The story goes that Belgian artist ROA originally
wanted to paint a heron. Whilst he was working on the mural though the
locals thought it was a crane and so ROA changed direction. The Crane is Charlie had been to Shoreditch a million
