LECTURE 6 : IRONMONGERIES I

Lecture Synopsis : Introduction, type of ironmongeries, functional


requirement, Material, Installation and detailing

It covers detailed aspects of ironmongery and offers guidance


to help students understand the different types of architectural
ironmongery available, the factors contributing to their design
and specification and related legislation, building regulations
and standards. Example on relevant products and standards to
help and guide all those responsible for fire safety in buildings,
regardless of the amount of knowledge they have of hardware.
Ironmongery
•Ironmongery is the term used for products made from
iron used in the design industry.

•This may include fixtures and fittings such as handles,


banisters and railings.

•Also known as architectural metalwork.

For fixing decking against walls, a timber
referred to as a 'wallplate' is anchor bolted
to the wall and joist hangers are used to
carry the transverse bearers.
Joist hangers are available in a range of
sizes to accommodate most bearer
dimensions and are affixed via galvanised
nails or SS screws.
Seven grades will be used:

Grade 0: Not approved for use on fire/smoke door


assemblies.

Grade A: Suitable for use on smoke door assemblies -


based solely on the requirements of the relevant product
standard.

Grade B: Suitable for use on smoke and fire door assemblies


with a minimum classification time of 15 min.

Grade C: Suitable for use on smoke and fire door


assemblies with a minimum classification time of 30mins.

Grade D: Suitable for use on smoke and fire door assemblies


with a minimum classification time of 60mins.

Grade E: Suitable for use on smoke and fire door assemblies


with a minimum classification time of 90mins.

Grade F: Suitable for use on smoke and fire door assemblies


with a classification time of more than 90mins.
