INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND
Accessibility and affordability of education are crucial factors for student success.
Online tutoring system allows real-time communication between tutors and students.
Online student tutoring portals connect students with qualified tutors and provide educational
materials.
Online tutoring can improve student performance but is limited in personalization and flexibility.
Many students prefer to be tutored by peers who understand their challenges and experiences.
This project proposes an online tutoring system that addresses accessibility and enables
personalization and flexibility for the students of the University of Dar es Salaam.
Interactive tools such as whiteboards or video conferencing will be added to make the tutoring
experience more engaging and dynamic.
University of Dar es Salaam
PROBLEM STATEMENT
The University of Dar es Salaam is a large institution with a diverse student population.
Many students struggle to keep up with their studies and may benefit from additional
support in the form of tutoring.
There is difficulty in accessing tutoring services due to limited availability of resources and
busy schedules of experts.
An online student tutoring portal could help address these challenges by providing
students with convenient, flexible access to tutoring services. The platform could
connect students who need help with subject-matter experts or by fellow students who
are proficient in the material and willing to serve as tutors.
The platform could create an environment for student collaboration.
By providing a convenient and accessible tutoring option, the University of Dar es Salaam
could help more students succeed in their academic endeavours.
University of Dar es Salaam
MAIN OBJECTIVE
The main objective is to develop an online student
tutoring portal to enable students to access tutoring
services.
University of Dar es Salaam
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
i. To gather requirement for an online tutoring portal for
students.
ii. To design an online tutoring portal for students based
on (i).
iii. Implementation of an online student tutoring portal.
iv. To test online student tutoring portal.
University of Dar es Salaam
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT
The online student tutoring portal will improve access to tutoring resources and make it more
accessible to students in need.

The online platform allows for scheduling of tutoring sessions at convenient times, which can
help students with busy schedules or other commitments.

It provides personalized attention and tailored explanations to students in a one-on-one or
small group setting, which is more beneficial than a larger classroom setting.

The portal also provides benefits to the tutors, such as the ability to earn money, gain valuable
experience and skills, work on their own schedule and balance tutoring with other
obligations or activities.
University of Dar es Salaam
SCOPE OF THE PROJECT
The project aims to develop an online student tutoring portal for the University of Dar es
Salaam to allow students to access tutoring services remotely.
The portal will be made available to all students of the University.
The portal will include tools for tutors to track and manage schedules and student
appointments.
The project will involve activities such as requirement gathering, designing diagrams,
models, user interface and database schema, implementation, and testing of the
portal.
The project will be completed within the given timeframe.

PROPOSED SOLUTION
This project will propose an online tutoring system that will solve accessibility to
tutoring services for the students of the University and enable personalization
and flexibility of tutoring services.

LITERATURE REVIEW
A summary of literature reviewed so far
University of Dar es Salaam
Concept of PPT in Online Student Tutoring Portals.
Peer to peer tutoring (PPT) in its traditional sense is a learning technique which
allows students to tutor their fellow classmates. This means that the friendship
connections they make in lessons, the ease of understanding that comes with
communicating with someone of a similar age and the confidence to ask
questions all remain during their learning experience.
Live video or phone calls involve a real-time lesson involving a teacher with some
knowledge about a subject and a learner, who is keen to gain knowledge about
a particular topic. This allows a more direct, personal approach to learning and
encourages students of different backgrounds and ages to form connections.
These connections develop as a result of the inevitable communication
between the participants of the call.
University of Dar es Salaam
The benefits of peer to peer tutoring are:
• Learning progression can be up to 5 months , It promotes active learning,
• Leads to higher levels of academic achievement,
• More financially efficient than paying for a traditional tutor,
• Interaction between students is a form of active learning, as students are not merely listening
to information,
• Encourages the personal and social development of the individual,
• Facilitates friendships between teachers and learners,
• Urges learners to take charge of their own learning journey,
• Develops the communication skills of both the student and the teacher,
• Promotes learners to discover the most effective ways of learning,
• Tutoring can be tailored to a particular curriculum and it allows mature learners to continue
expanding their knowledge.

Challenges of using Online Student Tutoring Portals
Lack of Personalization. Online student tutoring portals may not be able to offer the
same level of personalized and flexible tutoring services that students can
receive through one-on-one tutoring with a peer.
Low level of interaction and communication between tutors and students.
Related Works
There are many other online student tutoring platforms available in the real world,
each with its own set of features and tools that can help students to connect
with tutors and receive academic support. Some popular platforms include
Silabu, Mtabbe, Chegg Tutors, Tutor.com, and Wyzant.
University of Dar es Salaam
Project Gap
While some studies have found that online tutoring platforms can be effective in
improving student performance and satisfaction, most of the known platforms
are questionable in creating the long-term impact on student learning. Most
platforms are faced with the lack of student engagement. Some students may
find it difficult to stay motivated and engaged when learning online, particularly
if they are not receiving regular feedback and support from their tutors.
This project is intended to fill in those gaps.
University of Dar es Salaam
METHODOLOGY
The project follows the Waterfall methodology, which consists of 5 stages: Requirements, Design,
Implementation, Testing and Maintenance.

The Requirements stage is used to understand and define project expectations, costs, assumptions, risks
and dependencies.
The Design stage allocates requirements to hardware or software and establishes overall system
architecture.
The Implementation stage realizes the design as a set of programs, with programmers writing
applications and unit testing to verify each unit meets its specifications.
The Testing stage integrates and tests the system as a whole to ensure it meets the requirements and is
error-free.
The Maintenance stage includes correcting errors, improving implementation and enhancing the system’s
services.
University of Dar es Salaam

Why waterfall
i. Clear and well-defined requirements that don’t change during development.
ii. High degree of predictability in terms of time and resources.
iii. Emphasizes thorough documentation.
iv. Includes formal review and acceptance processes to ensure project meets
stakeholders requirements and is of high quality.
