What is a carbon
footprint?
A carbon footprint is the total
amount of greenhouse gases
(including carbon dioxide and
methane) that are generated by
our actions.
Globally, the average carbon
footprint is closer to 4 tons. To
have the best chance of
avoiding a 2℃ rise in global
temperatures, the average
global carbon footprint per year
Carbon dioxide CO2 emissions from energy consumption in the needs to drop to under 2 tons
Philippines from 2012 to 2021(in million tons of carbon dioxide) by 2050.
CLIMATE CHANGE
Climate change refers to long-term shifts in
temperatures and weather patterns. These
shifts may be natural, such as through
variations in the solar cycle.
But since the 1800s, human activities have been the main
driver of climate change, primarily due to burning fossil fuels
like coal, oil and gas. According to a report issued
in 2019 by the Institute for
Economics and Peace, the
Philippines is the country most
vulnerable to climate change.
The Philippines is made up
of about 7,641 of islands off
the southeast coast of China.
Its geography is one of the
main factors for being most at
risk from the effects of the
climate crisis.
Causes of Climate Change
Burning fossil fuels generates
greenhouse gas emissions that act like a
blanket trapping the sun’s heat and raising
temperatures.
Some greenhouse gas emissions that are
causing climate change include carbon
dioxide and methane. These come from
using gasoline for driving a car. Clearing land
and forests can also release carbon dioxide.
Landfills for garbage are a major source of
methane emissions. Energy, industry,
transport, buildings, agriculture and land
use are among the main emitters.
Indicators:
• Between 1958 and 2014, the Philippines experienced a 0.62°C
increase in yearly average mean temperature, with the rate of
change increasing over time.
• Climate change has resulted in an increase in the amount and
intensity of rainfall, with more rainy days observed in recent
decades.
• A study produced by Climate Central shows that around 150 million
people currently live in areas set to be submerged by 2050, and
about 70% of these people at risk are South East Asia, including the
Philippines. As the Philippines are a collection of islands, there are
a lot of people living on the coast.
Some of the Impacts of Climate Change
a. Climate change events including sea level rise
b. Increased frequency of extreme weather events
c. Rising temperatures
d. Heavy rainfall
e. Coastal flooding poses the greatest threat to the urban
poor
f. Intense droughts & water scarcity
g. Severe fires
h. Rising sea levels,
i. Melting polar ice
j. Catastrophic storms
k. Declining biodiversity.
Sea levels in the Philippines are rising at
roughly twice the global average rate.
When particularly powerful storms, such as
Typhoon Haiyan, hit land, the higher sea
level contributes to storm surges of up to
15–20 feet.
Global heating is causing the ice caps at
the north and south poles to melt,
resulting in rising sea levels.
As the Philippines are a collection of
islands, there are a lot of people living on
the coast. Add to this the low elevation of
much of the land and you have a recipe for
disaster.
Unfortunately, climate change is
already having a devastating effect
on sealife.
Rising sea temperatures and
ocean acidification from pollution
are killing off the coral reefs
surrounding the Philippines. The
result is that fish will have less to
feed on and will either die off or
migrate elsewhere. That means far
less fish are caught, driving up prices
and leaving thousands hungry.
3. Threat to water supplies
Climate change is already causing water scarcity by lowering
the quality and quantity of available water. Extreme rainfall
causes floods and landslides, which increase runoff, impair
water quality, and destroy water supply infrastructure.
4. Impact on Energy Supplies
Climate change could impact the Philippines’ energy supply, as well
as increasing energy consumption due to increased demand for air
conditioning. Hydropower production, which accounts for 20% of the
country’s energy supply, is threatened by climate change-related water
scarcity.
5. Effects on the natural environment
Wildfires are becoming more common due to drought conditions,
believed to be exacerbated by climate change and El Niño. Increased
temperatures and humidity in these places have been linked to the
spread of invasive plants and insects in natural ecosystems.
6. Impact on health
Heavier rains and rising temperatures both help mosquitos grow and
survive; thus, health risks from mosquito-borne diseases including
diarrhea, dengue fever, and malaria are predicted to worsen

The Philippines Climate Change Policy
In order to adapt to and mitigate climate change,
the Philippines passed the Climate Change Act in
2009, requiring local governments to develop a local
climate change action plan, or LCCAP. However, only
160 of 1,700 LGUs had LCCAPs in place as of July
2016.
