WHAT IS THE EFFECT OF

MOVING CRUSTAL
PLATES?
EARTHQUAKE
➔ The sudden shaking of the ground caused by the
passage of seismic waves through earth’s rocks.
Seismic waves are produced when some form of
energy stored in Earth’s crust is suddenly released.
SEISMOMETER OR SEISMOGRAPH an instrument
used to detect and record earthquakes.

SEISMOGRAM a graph output by

a seismograph. It is a record of
the ground motion at a
measuring station.
HYPOCENTER OR FOCUS is
a point within the Earth
where an earthquake rupture
starts. The EPICENTER is the
point directly above the
focus at the surface of the
Earth.
➔ The earthquake releases 3 types of seismic waves:
1. Primary (P waves)
2. Secondary (S waves)
3. Long surface (L waves)
➔ The P wave and S wave travel into the Earth’s interior
while L wave travel on the surface. These waves
travel at different velocities, thus, do not arrive at a
seismic recording station at the same time.
TRIANGULATION METHOD - is use to find the epicenter of an
earthquake from at least three different locations.
The difference in
the arrival time
B
will tell us the
distance of the
earthquake’s
focus from the
seismic recording
A station.

C A. P-5:30:12, S-5:30:17

B. P-5:32:15, S-5;32:27

C. P- 5:33:30, S- 5:33:55
Therefore, the farther the recording instrument from
the focus, the greater the difference in arrival time of
the first P-wave compared to the first S-wave.
GOOD LUCK! ENJOY THE RIDE :)
