RAENAH UPPAL
KARATE ORIGINATED -

• Shotokan Karate was founded by Grandmaster Gichin Funakoshi

who studied Te under Grandmaster Itosu and Grandmaster
Higaonna in Okinawa, Japan. Back then, Karate was called Te
(hand), and different types of Te were studied in various areas of
Okinawa. Like most martial arts, Shotokan karate has its roots in
ancient China, from where it was brought to Okinawa, then to
Japan, and then to the rest of the world. Our art is usually classified
as "hard," complementary to "soft" circular martial arts such as
Aikido and Tai Chi Chuan.
