EXPRESSIONISM

 Expressionism first originated in the visual arts and was later

applied to music and other arts in the early 20th century.
Following impressionism in art and music, the harsh, bold
expressionism era can be considered a counterpoint to
impressionism’s gauzy sweetness.
 Instead of ethereal (ghostly) impressions of beauty in nature,
 expressionism focuses on the inner angst (anguish) and fear
lurking within the subconscious mind. Expressionism in music
embraces jarring dissonance and radical distortion.
ELEMENTS OF MUSIC IN EXPRESSIONISM STYLE

 Dissonance is the crucial element of

expressionist music and
 consonantharmonies are nowhere to be
found here.
EXPRESSIONISM

It expresses the meaning of emotional experience rather

than physical reality.
One of the proponents of expressionism is Arnold
Schoenberg.
While the expressionist era in music begins in roughly 1900,
the term “expressionist” was probably first applied to music in
1918 regarding Arnold Schoenberg, an expressionist painter
and composer.
