NANOTECHNOLOGY

WHAT IS NANOTECHNOLOGY
-This technological branch manipulates the
molecular structure of materials to change their
intrinsic properties and obtain others with
revolutionary applications.
EXAMPLES AND APPLICATIONS
OF NANOTECHNOLOGY
ELECTRONICS
Carbon nanotubes are close to replacing silicon as a material
for making smaller, faster and more efficient mivrochips and
devices, as well as lighter, more conductive and stronger
quantum nanowires.
ENERGY
A new semiconductor developed by kyoto University makes it
possible to manufacture solar panels that double the amount
of sunlight converted into electricity. Nanotechnology also
lowers costs, produces stronger and lighter wind turbines,
improves fuel efficiency and, thanks to the thermal insulation
of some nanocomponents, can save energy.
BIOMEDICINE
The properties of some nanomaterials make them ideal for improving
early diagnosis and treatment of neurodegenerative disease or
cancer. They are able to attack cancer cells selectively without
harming other healthy cells. Some nanoparticles have alson been
used to enhance pharmaceutical products such as sunscreen.
ENVIRONMENT
Air purification with ions, wastewater purification with nanobubbles
or nanofiltration systems for heavy metals are some of
environmentally-friendly applications. Nanocatalysts are also
available to make chemical reactions more efficient and less polluting.
FOOD
In this field, nanobiosensors could be used to detect the
presence of pathogens in food or nanocomposites to improve
food production by increasing mechanical and thermal
resistance and decreasing oxygen transfer in package products.
TEXTILE
Nanotechnology makes it possible to develop
smart fabrics that don’t stain nor wrinkle,as well
as stronger, lighter and more durable materials to
make motorcycle helmets or sports equipment.
What is climate change
Climate change refers to long-term
shifts in temperatures and weather
patterns. These shifts may be natural, but
since the 1880s, human activities have
been the main driver oh climate change,
primarily due to the burning of fossil
fuels (like coal, oil and gas), which
produces heat-trapping gases.
What is the cause of climate change?
As greenhouse gas emissions blanket the earth,
they trap the sun’s heat. This leads to global
warming and climate change. The world is now
warming faster than at any point in recorded
history.
Generating power
Generating electricity and heat by burning
fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas
causes a large chunk of global emissions.
Manufacturing goods
Manufacturing and industry produce emissions,
mostly from burning fossil fuels to produce energy for
making things like cement, iron, steel, electrinics,
plastics, clothes and other goods.
Cutting down forests
-Cutting down forest to create farms or pastures, or for other reasons, causes emissions, since trees, when
thery are cut, release the carbon they have been storing.
The global mean sea-level rose by 7 centimetres in just 25years. Some
seaside cities around the world are already losing their coasts to rising
sea levels.
The Earth’s temperature responds to variations in greenhouse gas concentration, as evidenced by
ice cores taken from tropical mountain glaciers, Antarctica, and Greenland. Tree rings, ocean
sediments, coral reefs, and sedimentary rock strata are further sources of ancient information.
