Objectives

1. Discuss the content on teaching and assessment of reading skills; reading


purpose & reading comprehension, reading as a process, goals &
techniques for teaching reading, strategies for developing reading skills,
procedures in teaching reading, ways of assessing reading, other ways of
assessment, and micro & macro speaking skills.

2. Demonstrate one (1) sample activity for teaching and assessment of


speaking skills.

The purpose for reading and the type of text determine the specific:
● KNOWLEDGE
● SKILLS and
● STRATEGIES

Reading COMPREHENSION is thus much more than DECODING.


It results when the reader knows which SKILLS and STRATEGIES are
appropriate for the type of text and understand how to apply them to accomplish
the reading purpose.
TEACHERS SHOULD BE ABLE TO:
● Cultivates student’s awareness of the reading process
● Allow students to practice the full repertoire of reading strategies
● Encourage student to read and to learn
● Show student strategies that will work best
● Have student practice reading strategies
● Encourage student to evaluate their comprehension
● Encourage the development of reading skills
● Motivate student to use transfer strategy from one task to another

Through increasing student’s awareness and by explicitly teaching reading


strategies, student will NOT ONLY ONE STRATEGIES BUT ALSO THE
CONFIDENCE to handle any communications situations that they may encounter
in and beyond the classroom.
