• Indian Medical Council (Professional conduct,
etiquette & ethics) Regulations, 2002.

• MCI with prior approval of the Central Govt., laid


down certain regulations wrt code of ethics for
registered medical practitioners.

• It comprises of 8 chapters
Chapter 1
 Code of medical ethics
• 1. Character of physician

• 2. Maintaining good medical practice


• 3. Maintenance of medical reports
• 4. Generic names of drugs should be used
• 5. Highest quality assurance in medical care

• 6. Exposure of unethical conduct


• 7. Payment of professional services
• 8. Evasion of legal restrictions
Chapter 2
 Duties of physicians to their patients

1. Obligations to the sick & injured


2. Patience, delicacy & secrecy

3. Prognosis
4. The patient must not be neglected
Chapter 3
 Duties of physician in consultation

1. Unnecessary consultations should be avoided


2. Consultation for patient’s benefit

3. Punctuality
4. Treatment after consultation
5. Patients are referred to specialists
Chapter 4

 Responsibility of physician to each other

1. Dependence on each other

2. Conduct in consultation
3. Consultant shall not take charge of the ongoing
medical case
4. Appointment of substitute

1. Hold enquiry & opportunity to be heard.
2. Removal or de-registered.
3. Decision to be taken - 6 months.
4. During complaint pendency period he/she
cannot practice.
