Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

In World Language classes

The next few slides provide suggestions to
incorporate UDL principles in World Language
classes.

Each slide is specific to a different disability,

which you will see in the title of the slide.
Specific Learning Disabilities
(language difficulties)
• Practice and review a concept frequently
• Present concepts in logical progression
• Make connections to background knowledge
• Specifically teach language sounds
• Ask students to explain a language concept in their own words
• Incorporate reading, writing, speaking, and listening on the concept
• Use color coding for grammar agreement (e.g., gender, number, etc.)
Dyslexia
• Provide oral options in lieu of written
• Practice pronunciation
• Focus on communication, not accuracy
• Use flashcards
• Teach vocabulary within context as opposed to lists
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
• Have structure to lessons
• Lean into student enthusiasm
• Build in heavy culture to keep interest
Visual impairments
• Enhance listening and communication skills/activities
• Use tactile methods when possible
• Mimimize glare, shadows, backlighting
Hearing impairments
• Record lessons so students can replay/relisten as necessary
• Unlimited oral assessment opportunities
• Repeat or rephrase what other students say
