Genetics for Biomedical Sciences

SEPT – OCT 2022

What is Genetics?

Genetics is an experimental science investigating

the transmission and decoding of genetic information
Gustav
From molecules to populations Klimt

In this course, we are going to discuss:

- Molecular Genetics: how genetic material works at the molecular level
- Transmission Genetics: how transmission of genes from parent to
offspring influences the offspring's traits
- (Population Genetics)

2
Goals:

• Acquiring knowledge and insights, and develop an intuition of Molecular Genetics of humans, and of other
organisms, and the relation to disease, diagnostics and treatment. (see learning objectives course
description: CANVAS site)

•   Meaning and content of (many) terms / concepts

•   Focus on mechanisms of biological / biochemical processes

•   To be able to apply your knowledge and insights when analyzing and solving 'problems'

•   Experience with performing experiments (practicals, calculation skills)

•   Getting familiar with Use of 'gene' and 'protein' databases > Bioinformatics (practiced in computer
assignments)

•   Become familiar with scientific medical / biological jargon

3
Course
• On campus Lectures: highly recommended!

•   Online Workgroups: mandatory

•   Practical 'wet': mandatory
•  Computer assignments: mandatory and can be made 'at home'

•   Book: Genetics: Analysis & Principles, 7th ed., By Brooker

•   Assignments (Book / CANVAS): mandatory
•   Self study: A lot !!

4
Book options

• Hard-copy of the book + Connect

• eBook +Connect
• Connect 360 or 720 days

ection/e-tutucci-genetics-part-i-and-ii-----202
2?app=newconnect.mheducation.com
.

• Extra sale today will be held in WN-F637

5
Purpose of the Lab practicals:

• First introduction to laboratory techniques

• Demonstration of a number of molecular techniques
• Become aware of the Experimental character of this science

> complete 'report' of the experiments is not necessary; notes of test preparation and processing of
results in Lab-Journal (checked by assistant)

> Required preparation before each practical: Reading through introduction tests, etc. 'HOMEWORK'
workgroup meetings

6
Rules for the Lab practicals
• Will be in MF-A013

• The manual will be uploaded on the Canvas site

• Stick to the Corona guidelines: social distance, etc.

• You work on your own

• Always wear Lab coat : without it, you will not be admitted
Extra sale today (5/9/22) will be held in WN-F637 (by Gyrinus natans association

• Work clean and organized

• Don’t touch pipet tips with fingers !

• Make notes how you performed the experiment, etc.

• No food or drinks

• No mobile phones

7
Book - Assignments:

- Internet site ‘Connect’ which is associated with the book Genetics: Analysis & Principles,

Brooker 7th edition

- Log in as student with the code that comes with the book:

- See the instructions on the CANVAS ‘Genetics’ site

- They will be released each Monday, and you will have to submit the assigment before the end

of the week (Sunday at 23:59).

8
Book - Assignments:

• Mostly multiple choice questions (not just select the answer you think is right, argue why the
others are not correct)
• Make ‘assignments’ about the lecture material within 3-4 days after each lecture
• Check due date: be aware of the PM / AM
• Questions / topics from these assignments and practice tests can come back in the exams in one
way or another. Practice for the exams.
• You will become familiar with the topics and get insight
•   Ability to test yourself

9
Assessment / Grading (See also Syllabus on Canvas)
Component 1 (85%) + Component 2 (15%)

Grade component (1)

Theory : 85 %

- Mark for Theory must be sufficient (>=5,5); An insufficient mark (<5.5) can’t be compensated for
by sufficient mark for assignments / practicals.

- Two ‘partial exams (29th of September, 27th of October)

- First exam counts for 45%, second exams for 55%;
- Final theory mark is the weighted average of the two partial exams.
- ‘Multiple choice’ examination (~70/80 questions)
• It is not possible to do a missed ‘Partial’ exam
• In case Theory mark is insufficient; the resit covers all chapters (January 11th 2023).

10
Assessment / Grading (See also Syllabus on Canvas)

Grade component (2)

- Book and computer assignments : 15%
- Book assignment 5% (at least ~ 80% must have been completed)
- Computer-Practicum-assignments. 10%

• Everything must be sufficient!

- The Lab journal must be sufficient.

- Missed Practicals can’t be caught up

11
Order of the subjects discussed is different from the order in the book

Study goals: see study guide (CANVAS site)

> Order of the topics :

- From “Small” (molecular): ‘molecular biology’
• DNA, RNA, genes, regulation of gene expression in prokaryotes and eukaryotes,
mutations and consequences, etc.
- To ‘Large’ and the behavior of big structures:
• Chromosome, structure, variation, inheritance, cell division, exceptions (many), etc.
• Genetics inheritance
- Furthermore: Cancer, research techniques, diagnostic tools, biotechnology, etc.
