Lesson Objective

1. Describe the role of enzymes in digestion.

2. Describe the role of bacteria in digestion.

Bacteria in digestion

 Your large intestine

contains bacteria
 These live off fibre in your
diet
 They produce important
vitamins such as Vit K
 Live yoghurts contain
these bacteria
Enzymes
Enzymes are specific
Cabohydrase
Protease
Lipase
Different types of digestive enzymes
Digestive enzymes are the chemicals that break large
insoluble food molecules into smaller soluble molecules.

Each enzyme is specific to a certain type of food :

 carbohydrase – breaks Carbohydrase

carbohydrate into smaller
sugars
 protease – breaks protein
into amino acids
protease
 lipase – breaks fat(lipids)
into fatty acids and
glycerol.

2. Saliva contain
enzymes for digestion

Gullet 1. Muscular tube pushes

Stomach 1. Food is mixed with Carbohydrates &

juices to be digested.

Small Intestine 1. Complete digestion is Digestion of

Stomach acid
Stomach acid breaks down food and
also kills harmful microorganisms in
food.
