Bone marrow
Made by:PB
What is bone marrow?

The soft, spongy tissue that has many

blood vessels and is found in the
center of most bones. There are two
types of bone marrow: red and yellow.
Red bone marrow contains blood stem
cells that can become red blood cells,
white blood cells, or platelets.
What is the function of red bone marrow?

• Red bone marrow is where red blood cells,

platelets and white blood cells are created.
Red blood cells carry oxygen to the lungs and
organs. White blood cells are what strengthen
our immune system and fight infections in the
body
What is the function of yellow bone marrow?

• Yellow bone marrow stores fat. There are two

types of stem cells in yellow bone marrow
(adipocytes and mesenchymal stem cells).
These cells preserve fat for energy production
and develop bone, cartilage, muscles and fat
cells for your body.

what would happen if we don't have bone
marrow

• Without bone marrow, our bodies could not

produce the white cells we need to fight
infection, the red blood cells we need to carry
oxygen, and the platelets we need to stop
bleeding.
Structure of bone marrow
• It consists of hematopoietic tissue islands and
adipose cells surrounded by vascular sinuses
interspersed within a meshwork of trabecular
bone.
