Managerial Functions

The primary work of all managers can be grouped within

four functions:

(1) planning,

(2) organizing,

(3) leading,

(4) controlling.
First Function of Management: Planning

It can be defined as process of identifying and


selecting appropriate organizational goals and
courses of action.

• Defining goals and tackling them

• Defines future of organization- long-term


plans

• Develops strategic plans

Types Of Planning:
Plans can be classified based on time according
to:
1.Long-term:
It effects entire organization and bridges gap
between what organization is and what it wants
to be.It can take duration of ten years and above.

2.Medium -term
Translate strategic plans into specific actions-
who, what, where, etc.It can take the duration of
five years.
3.Short term:
It is short range in nature, and is carried out by
lower level management. It would for one year
Second Function of Management:
Organizing
It can be defined as a process that
involves grouping people into
departments according to the kinds
of job-specific tasks they perform
Managers lay out lines of authority
and responsibility
Decide how to coordinate
organizational resources

Organizing
• how to best implement the plans

• Decides how an organization is


structured

• Assigns authority and


responsibility

• Works to acquire resources

• Decides coordination
Third Function of Management:
Leading
 It can be defined as Influencing and motivating

people to perform tasks for goal achievement.

• Uses knowledge, character, and charisma- inspire


achievement of goals

• Leads by communication, building


Third Function of Management:
Leading

commitment, creating shared values, and

encouraging high performance

 Uses the power of granting rewards and


punishments
Fourth Function of Management:
Controlling
It can be defined as the measurement and
correction of performance in order to make sure
that enterprise objectives and the plans devised
to attain them are being accomplished.
It can be defined as process of monitoring
activities, measuring performance, comparing
results, making corrections
Fourth Function of Management:
Controlling

Planning & controlling are closely related .

Control involves three steps:-

1-establishing standard

2- measuring performance

3-correcting variations from standard and plans
