ATMOSPHERIC LIFTING MECHANISMS
INTRODUCTION
This topics discuss how the Air literally moving pushed
upward.Air can move for several reason.
The upward motion of air can lead to the formation Of clouds
and precipitation if there is sufficient moisture to reach
condensation such as the air cools while moving up
In order to undersatand why clouds form, rain falls and
Tornadoes develop. One needs a solid understanding of the
mechanisms that cause air to liftin the first place. So its
important to study the Four main Atmospheric lifting
mechanisms.
AIR LIFT DIFINITION

AIR IS A FLUID NOT UNLIKE WATER OR ANY OTHER LIQUID OR GAS BUT
AIR IS A MIXTURE WITH A TREMENDOUSLY LOWDENSITY.AIR DOES
01
NOT JUST FROM A STATIONARY BLANKET AROUND THE PLANET.IT
MOVES.DUE TO THE UNEVEN HEATING OF EARTHS SURFACE, SOME
MASSES OF AIR GET WARMER WHILE OTHERS GET
COLDER.CONVECTION CURRENTS CREATE WINDS WHICH PUSHED
THESE AIR MASSES ALL ACROSS THE PLANET.

OUR
WORK
THE MOVEMENT OF AIR IS MAINLY CAUSED
DUE TO THE DIFFERENCES IN PRESSURE
AND TEMPERATURE.WARM AIR IS HIGHER
AND IT RISES UPWARDS, MEANWHILE COLD
AIR IS DENSER AND HENSE IT MOVES
DOWN TO REPLACE THE WARM AIR.
02
CONVERGENT LIFTING
Convergence is the lifting when air near the surface
flows together and is pushed upward when it is
squeezed together. The rising air in all lifting
mechanisms causes an updraft, which keeps clouds
particles suspended regardless of gravity.
CONVECTIONAL LIFTING
Convectional lifting is associated with surface
heating of the air at the ground surface. If
enough heating occurs, the mass of air becomes
warmer and lighter than the air in the
surrounding environment, and just like a hot air
balloon it begins to rise, expand, and cool.
OROGRAPHIC LIFTING
Orographic lift occurs when an air mass is forced
from a low elevation to a higher elevation as it
moves over rising terrain. As the air mass gains
altitude it quickly cools down adiabatically, which
can raise the relative humidity to 100% and
create clouds and, under the right conditions,
precipitation.
03
FRONTAL LIFTING
Frontal lifting occurs when warm and cold air
masses meet. The cold, heavy air mass will
slide underneath while the warm, light air
mass is pushed upward. Convective lifting
happens when a natural convection current is
formed. The warm air rises over the heat
source while colder, heavier air floods in
underneath.
FOUR TYPES OG FRONTAL LIFTING MECHANISMS

COLD FRONTS

WARM FRONTS

OCCLUDED FRONTS

STATIONARY FRONTS
COLD FRONTS
*COLD AIR ACTIVELY MOVES TO WARD WARMER AIR
AND FORCES THE WARM AIR TO RISE

*THE COLD AIR IS AGGRESSOR.

WARM FRONTS

*WARM AIR ACTIVELY MOVES AT COLDER AIR AND RISES ABOVE THE
COLD AIR.

*WARM AIR IS THE AGGRESOR.

OCCLUDED FRONTS

*OCCURS WHEN TWO COLD AIR MASSES MEET, FORCING ALL OF

THE WARM AIR ABOVE THE GROUND SURFACE.

*COLD AIR IS THE AGGRESOR.

STATIONARY FRONT

* WARM AND COLD AIR MASSES ARE NEXT

TO EACH OTHER, BUT NEITHER IS
AGGRESSIVE
