Revision: Past Continuous

1. I was watching TV at 8 p.m. last night.

2. The sun was shining and birds were singing.

3. They were playing when their parents arrived.


While and As
1. Generally, (while)‫عندما‬/ ‫حين‬
and (as) are‫ي‬
used‫ ف‬to introduce longer
actions.
Ex: They arrived as I was leaving.
2. We use (while) and (as) to talk about two longer actions that
take place at the same time.
Ex: While you were playing football, l was working hard in the
garden.
When-‫عندما‬
1. We use (when) to introduce a shorter action that interrupts a
longer one.
Ex: He was walking home when he met an old friend.
2. We also use (when) to talk about an event that is
immediately followed by another event.
Ex: When it stopped raining, we went outside.
Punctuation Rule
We can use (when), (as) or (while) at the beginning of a sentence or
in the middle of a sentence.
1) If it is used at the beginning, there is a comma.
Ex: When it stopped raining, we went outside.
2) If it is used in the middle, there is no comma.
Ex: I was working hard in the garden while you were doing your
homework.
:Complete the sentences with while, as or when

1. No one was listening.......................Sam was telling the joke.

2. Everyone laughed…………… Karen told the joke.

3. ……………… we were planning our route, the wind blew the map away.

4. …………… we planned our route, we didn't have a very good map.

5. Sue and Ian decided to get a sandwich.....................they were waiting for you.

.Collocations: Words usually come together

Descriptive adjectives can also collocate with nouns.

А good way to remember these collocations is to learn them with the


nouns they describe.

• We went on a long journey with my family.


• Palestine has beautiful weather.
• I met nice/ friendly people when I visited Europe.
• We visited fantastic/ popular places there.
