unproven or ineffective.

• Many consumers simply do not know the difference between health
products that havce been shown to be effective and those which have
not.
Placebo effect
• The mind is a powerful influence on how we feel . The placebo effect
means that we feel better because we think we SHOULD feel better.
For example , if a person takes a vitamins pill because he believes he
will have more energy, he may think he has more energy from foods,
not from pills. Feeling energetic is easily controlled by the mind unless
a person has a health problem that compromises energy levels.
Self Limiting condition
• Some health problems are self-limiting. That means the disease or
condition runs its course even if the person does nothing at all .
Problems cause by viruses are like that, They go through an active
stage and then a laten stage, if a person practice quackery and the
virus –produced problem goes away, they may give credit to quackery
when the problem have gone away

Form of Quackery
• Health quackery can be characterized as a vast business fastly growing
due to the support of people diagnosed with incurable diseases.
Quackery has three forms - medical, device, and nutritional. Each
differs in the purpose of the products and services offered.
Medical Quakery
• It includes cures
treatment and remedies
of various health
condition that are
drugless and bloodless
Nutritional Quackery
• It involve
promotion of food
and other nutritional
practices that claim to be all
natural
Device Quakery
• Quackery that makes use of
miraculous gadgets
• These products and services are not proven to work effectively
through scientific research and studies. But quacks make claims that
are not scientifically proven yet. They find ways to promote these
products even if they were not tested yet through tv and radio
commercials. Thus, victimizing particularly ill people as the most
vulnerable and usually trust quackery due to despair.
• Believing quackery and consuming their products can bring danger to
an individual. It could lead to worsening the health condition,
postpone cure and relief, or death. It can be that the product contains
toxic chemicals harmful to the body.
Vigilance
• is essential to avoid being a victim. Knowledge of examining and
evaluating the products or services is a crucial skill to prevent further
harm these frauds could cause. Philippine government agencies like
Department of Health (DOH), Bureau of Food and Drug (BFAD), Food
and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Philippine National Police
(PNP) keep regulations against these products.
Below are some warning signs a product or
service is quackery.
• Claims that it can cure any chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and the
like.
● Gives vague statements without much detail on how it works.
● Suspicious testimonials ascertain only for the claim.
● Diagnose your health condition without proper laboratory procedural
examinations.
● A dietary product or plan that works its magic in just seven days or shorter
period to lose weight.
● Recruits their victims to sell the products as well.
● Focuses on the monetary gain from the product.
• However, one can check on the claims of a quack by interrogation. Ask
questions on how the product really works and what are its contents.
One should check the credibility of the manufacturer and the person
promoting it. Also, look for disclosure, which tells the purpose and
caveat of the product. Also, the interactivity of the product or service
must be presented for feedback mechanism and means of
information exchanges between the consumer and manufacture

are unwilling to take responsibility for their own health.

taken In by someone promoting something sensational .
The Straw Grasper
• These are desperate individual. They may have a life threatening
condition and want to believe there is hope when there is no hope.
The quack is all too willing to provide the victim with False Hope.

• Quacks follow legitimate science and say that whatever they are
promoting is the latest and greatest in science .
It’s a big Business
• Quacks are often very successful. Because There is “a sucker born
every minute” they make millions of dollars off those who fall for
schemes.
It’s for an incurable condition
• Quack exploit the health problems that modern medicine cannot
cure. Persons living with AIDs, arthritis , some cancers and alzheimers
often fall prey to quacks because they want to believe that something
will help their condition.
