Week 7-Dimension of Development: First Aid

Education
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this chapter, the learners are expected to:
1. Explain the meaning and principles of first aid
education
2. Hone and apply first aid skills during emergency
situations’ and
3. Participate actively in the delivery of first aid
services.
First Aid
The immediate treatment using available facilities or
materials and given to an injured or ill person while
waiting for medical assistance to arrive.

A Good First Aider must be gentle, resourceful,


observant, tactful, sympathetic, consoling and
respectful.
Emergency
Is the sudden onset of medical or surgical severity
that, in the absence of immediate medical
attention, could reasonably and expectedly result in
serious danger to health or impairment of bodily
functions.
Take note of the following in activating medical assistance:
1. Situation of the person injured
2. Location
3. Number of persons injured
4. Extent of injury and first aid given
5. Telephone number from where you are calling.
6. The identity of the person who activates the medical
assistance
Methods of Rescue

Rescue breathing and CPR (Cardiopulmonary


Resuscitation)
Never perform CPR unless:
1. Breathing has stopped
2. There is no pulse
3. No one with training in CPR is present.
Transfer is moving a patient from one place to another
after giving first aid. The factors to consider in choosing
the transfer method are as follows:
1. Nature and severity of the injury
2. Size of the victim
3. Physical capabilities of the first aider
4. Number of personnel and equipment available
5. Nature of evacuation route
6. Distance to be covered
7. Gender of the victim
For basic life support, think ABC, Airway, Breathing, and
Circulation.
What to do if there is no breathing and pulse before
chest compression.
Step 1-Check for consciousness
Step 2-Open the airway
Step 3-Begin rescue breathing
Step 4-Check for Circulation
Step 5- Begin Chest Compression
CONCLUSION/INTEGRATION:
It is imperative that first aide or the immediate
treatment of an ill or injured person be learned by
everyone since accident happens anytime.
The first aider needs to adapt to the situations at hand
and improvise as necessary. Let us provide a helping
hand. If we are given an opportunity to help, we
should not hesitate to help.
