Waste Water Management

‘YAMUNA’
 River Yamuna is the largest tributary of the Ganga River  in North India. Its
total length is around 1370 kilometres  Yamuna originates from the Yamunotri
Glacier of Uttar  Kashi in Uttar Pradesh

 Yamuna is one of the most polluted rivers of the India

 The Yamuna has been reduced to a small stream due to draining industrial
effluents, sewage, dirt and other toxic substances
‘yamuna’ Pollution
Causes Of pollution in ‘Yamuna’
 Domestic Causes:
According to a report submitted by the Delhi Pollution Control
Committee and the Central Pollution Control Board(CPCB) to the
Yamuna Pollution Control Committee, at least 90% of domestic waste
water in the city flows into the yamuna.
 Industrial Causes:
Najafgarh and Shahdara drains are the major drains that discharge a
heavy load pollutants into river. 44 million liters of industrial effluents
are also discharged into daily into river
Causes Of pollution in ‘Yamuna’
 Idol Immersion leading to increased toxicity:
Immersion of idols during festivals with cheap lead and chrome
paints and POP and puja articles are a cause for concern for the river’s
quality.
 Plastic Pollution:
In Agra, the yamuna has been choked by intense plastic pollution
 Untreated Sewage:
More then 800 million liters of largely untreated sewage is
pumped in yamuna each year.

Effects of yamuna Pollution
 High amount of heavy metals in water can cause several health effects
such as reduced growth and development, cancer, organ damage
nervous system damage, etc..

 More than 800 million liters of largely untreated sewage is pumped in

the yamuna each day.

 Destruction of biodiversity Water pollution depletes aquatic ecosystem

and triggers unbridled proliferation of phytoplankton.
Community Initiatives

 Yamuna foundation for Blue Water INC.

Started in 2000 and the objectives is to clean the pollution of the
Yamuna river throughout its course and to create a better ecosystem in
New Delhi
 ‘Maa Shri Yamuna Seva Samiti’/Friends of Yamuna
Volunteer group started by newspaper hawker Ashok padhyay to do
his bit in protecting the river from further pollution.

Yamuna Purification Drive,2018

Organized by the Public Health Department .

line.

installed in Gurgaon.

polluted water at the treatment plant.
If the Government succeeds to clean the
Yamuna ,it will benefits the nation in various ways
