SMART SENSOR

TUTORIAL 1
TEMPERATURE SENSORS
What Actually Smart
Sensor Is ?
• A sensor producing an electrical output
when combined with interfacing electronic
circuits is known as “Smart Sensor", it is a
combination of both sensor and actuator.
• Takes input from the physical environment
and uses built-in compute resources to
perform predefined functions upon
detection of specific input and then
process data before passing it on.
• Smart sensors enable more accurate and
automated collection of environmental data
with less erroneous noise amongst the
accurately recorded information.

Sensors + Interfacing Hardware = Smart Sensors

Temperature Sensors:
• A smart temperature sensor is a
device, typically, a thermocouple
or resistance temperature detector,
that provides temperature
measurement in a readable form
• through an electrical
A thermometer is the signal.
most basic form of a
temperature meter that is used to measure the
degree of hotness and coolness.
Types Of Temperature Sensors:

• Contact Type Temperature Sensors:

There are a few temperature meters that measure the degree of hotness or
coolness in an object by being in direct contact with it.

• Non-Contact Type Temperature Sensors:

These types of temperature meters are not in direct contact of the object rather,
they measure the degree of hotness or coolness through the radiation emitted by the
heat source.
What do temperature sensors do?
A temperature sensor is a device that is designed to measure the
degree of hotness or coolness in an object. The working of a
temperature meter depends upon the voltage across the diode.
The temperature change is directly proportional to the diode’s
resistance. The cooler the temperature, lesser will be the
resistance, and vice-versa.

How does temperature sensor work?

The basic principle of working of the temperature sensors is the
voltage across the diode terminals. If the voltage increases, the
temperature also rises, followed by a voltage drop between the
transistor terminals of base and emitter in a diode.
It primarily consists of a magnetic, high tensile strength stretched
wire, the two ends of which are fixed to any dissimilar metal in a
manner that any change in temperature directly affects the tension in
the wire and, thus, its natural frequency of vibration.
Use Of Temperature Sensors In Automotive
Industries:
• Automotive temperature sensors are used to measure temperature at many places
in an automobile, and usually consist of either a thermistor, thermocouple,
resistance temperature detector (RTD), or infrared device.
• Thermocouples are usually used for higher temperature measurements (such as
exhaust gas temperatures), and infrared sensors are used where direct contact with
the object being sensed is undesirable.
• RTDs rely on certain metals' (usually platinum, nickel, or copper) thermo-resistive
behavior to detect changes in temperature.  RTDs respond to temperature changes
very linearly and can achieve good accuracy.
Various Temperature Sensors In Automotive
Sector
• Engine Temperature Sensor :
The engine control module uses its signal to determine the temperature of the
engine.
• Air Temperature Sensor :
The engine control module uses the air temperature and pressure to calculate the
intake air mass.
• Engine Oil Temperature Sensor :
This sensor is used to calculate the temperature of the engine oil.
• Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor :
Information from this sensor is used to regulate the exhaust gas recirculation system
in an engine.
• Fuel Temperature Sensor :
Fuel temperature sensors are located along the fuel delivery system, and provide
feedback to the PCM as to the state of the fuel system.
Various Temperature Sensors In Automotive
Sector
• Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor :
This sensor is located on the valve body of automatic transmissions and is used to
measure the temperature of the transmission fluid.
• Tire and Brake Disc Temperature Sensor :
These sensors are usually located in an area around the tire envelope, where sensor can
"view" the radiation emitted by either the tire or the brake disc.
• Auxiliary Heater Temperature Sensor :
These sensors provide feedback necessary to control these systems.
• Exterior Temperature Sensor :
Allows a person inside the vehicle to know the temperature outside of the vehicle.
• Cabin Temperature Sensor :
It measures the temperature within the vehicle, which will signal to the HVAC system to
either increase or decrease the temperature to fit a desired temperature range.
