FERNANDO QUETO AMORSOLO (1892-1972)
National Artist for Visual Arts
Amorsolo was a portraitist and painter of rural Philippine landscape from Paco, Manila. He is known for
his craftmanship and mastery in the use of light.

He is known for his illuminated landscape, which often portrayed traditional Filipino customs, culture,
fiestas and occupations.
In his paintings of Filipina women, Amorsolo rejected Western ideals of beauty in favor of Filipino
ideals and was bend of basing the faces of his subject on member of his family
He used natural light in his paintings and develop the backlighting technique Chiaroscuro, which
became his artistic trademark and his greatest contribution to Philippine painting
