DOH - HEMS
Training Preparation

Definition: Objective

A statement that describes the intended

outcome/expected result of an activity.

Necessary conditions that must be met to achieve

the outcome

Purpose of Objective Setting:

To focus attention on the intended outcome and

describe the behaviors needed to achieve that
outcome.

3 CRITERIA FOR OBJECTIVES

a. Intended outcome/Specific:
* Be able to enumerate types
* Identify the different parts of the circulatory system

b. Condition that must be met/Observable characteristic:

* must recognize colors and shape of drugs
* by correctly labeling the parts

c. Standard for success /Measurable charateristic:

* 90% correctly enumerated.
* all (100%) the drawing.

Example of Objectives :

Example 1: Upon completion of the session,

participants will be able to:

a. Enumerate the types of TB drugs (a) with 90%

accuracy (c) by recognizing the colors and shapes
as per blister/phase (b)

Example 2. Upon completion of the session,

participants will be able to:

a. Identify the different parts of the circulatory

system (a) by correctly labeling (b) all (100%)
the drawing (c).

BASIC CHARACTERISTIC OF OBJECTIVES

Specific - stated explicitly

Measurable - can be evaluated against
established standards
Observable - is capable of being seen

Example: List 3 characteristics of an

objective.

Specific - Tell the learner to list 3 characteristic

Measurable - Can count the number of characteristic
Observable - You can see a list

DOH - HEMS
Training Preparation

MUST BE ACHIEVABLE

• Objective should be developed with cognizance of the

commitment of time, money, space and personnel
available

TIME-BOUND

•Objective must define a practical timeline or deadline

while it must allow for some flexibility. Objectives must
be STRECHED.

SMARTS
Training Course for Basic Life Support Instructors 9
DOH - HEMS
Training Preparation

IT MUST BE REALISTIC

• must be directly related to problems or needs

• must be flexible and amenable to changes as the need for it
arises
• should be communicated and accepted by the learner before
the beginning of activities

MUST BE MEASURABLE

• should contain references to any performance constraints

which may bear upon the achievements of the objectives

TYPES OF OBJECTIVES
1. Managerial Objectives
2. Strategic Planning Objectives
3. Evaluation Objectives
4. Instructional /Training Objectives(learning
objectives) .

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Definition:

•Statement describing a proposed change in a

learner

• Ways of describing what the trainee should be

able to do at the end of session

• Describes an intended outcome in terms of

measurable student performance upon completion
of training program

LEVELS OF LEARNING OBJECTIVE

General :

Describes an expected learning outcomes upon

completion of a training program

Broad enough to be meaningful and descriptive

enough to facilitate training design

Example :To improve the capability of the participants in

the management of cardiopulmonary arrest
victims using basic life support technique.

Training Course for Basic Life Support Instructors 13

DOH - HEMS
Training Preparation

Specific:
•Statement of what a learner should be able to do, feel think
or know at the end of the session or course

Statement of the desired terminal behavior of performance

in terms of the learner/trainee

Example: By the end of the session participant will be

able to:

1. Identify the different parts of the circulatory system

by correctly labeling the drawing.

COMPONENTS OF A LEARNING OBJECTIVE STATEMENT

AUDIENCE - The learner or subject of the sentence

BEHAVIOR - What is the learner expected to do

(performance)
Example :

The trainer (audience) after having read the handouts on

compression is able to explain (behavior) its indications
and advantages.

SUGGESTIONS FOR WRITING

OBJECTIVES:
 Begin each objective with a verb

 State each objective in terms of participant’s

performance rather than the trainer’s performance

State each objective as a learning product rather than in

terms of learning process.

CONDITIONS WHICH FACILITATE LEARNING:

• An atmosphere which encourages people to be active.

• An atmosphere which promotes the individual’s

discovery of the personal meaning of ideas.

•Emphasizes the uniquely personal and subjective nature

of learning.

• Differences are good and desirable

evaluation.

* Encourages openness rather than concealment of self.

* Encourages trust in themselves as well as external sources.

* People feel they are respected and accepted

* Atmosphere which permit confrontation
