The Trunk

Level 2 Personal project and presentation in creative media

production
Your brief

You are working for film production

company Eon Productions.

• Your latest film is due to be released

on 26th May 2023.

Film-makers: you have one last part to

shoot, a tense sequence which
involves a mystery trunk.

Game designers: you need to produce

a 2D game tie-in.

THESE PRODUCTS NEED TO BE READY

FOR THE RELEASE DATE
Film-makers
• Remember that this is the last section of a longer feature
film. You don’t need to tell the whole story!
• The protagonist has been searching for this trunk.
• Your two to three minute sequence must start or end with
them finding and opening it.
• You can decide what’s in the trunk.
• You can also decide which genre this film belongs to.

• BUT remember that this is supposed to be a tense, dramatic

sequence

• YOU SHOULD DEMONSTRATE THE SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES

ON THE FOLLOWING SLIDE
Film-making
techniques
• Mise-en-scene that informs the
narrative
• Film rules
• Shot structure – planned sequence
• Transitions and effects appropriately
applied.
• Classic continuity editing
• Visible and invisible editing techniques
• Creation of appropriate soundtrack
Game
designers
• Your 2D game should involve the trunk motif
• It should involve a virtual environment
appropriate to the genre
• Your game should have at least three rooms
• The trunk could work similar to a locked door or
it could be linked to a collectible
• A time element is optional

• YOU SHOULD DEMONSTRATE THE SKILLS AND

TECHNIQUES ON THE FOLLOWING SLIDE
Games skills
and techniques
• Custom character design
• Appropriate level design
including increased challenges
• Programming of conditions or if /
else statements
• Score or health system
• Use of sound effects and music
• Testing and de-bugging
• You will need to keep either a Blog or a Vlog of
what you do each week
• This should describe and reflect on your activity
Both • eg I started to draw a storyboard…I’m not sure
I’ve got the sequence of shots right yet
disciplines • You should also discuss problems you have
encountered and how you have solved them
• At each stage, you should reflect on how it impacts
on your finished film/game
Other things you
need to know
• You will be graded pass, merit, distinction.
• You need to get the same grade on every criteria
(there are four)
• Grading criteria are on Teams and on
the weebly template
• The weebly template explains what is
required for each section
• https://chippmediafinalproject.weebly.c
om/
• If you get a referral on any section, you can only get
a pass overall
• The grades need to be agreed by another campus
and the UAL moderator
Setting up a
new Canva site
• You need to set up a NEW site specifically for your final
project
• You need the following pages:
• Planning and production
• Research
• Practical skills and presentation
• Evaluation and reflection

• When you publish, Post your new URL on Teams

• Remember to publish to a subdomain of Canva– ask
for help if unsure!
• If you have time, cut and paste the list of evidence
from the template in Teams : this gives you a checklist
on every page
Where do I start?
• Grab some paper and brainstorm ideas for what’s in
the box – 15 minutes

• Brainstorming rules
• Write everything down, even if you think it’s
rubbish
• DO NOT SELF-EDIT
• Do not worry about how you develop those
ideas
Considering
genre
• Genre helps your audience connect with your
story

• Link each idea for what’s in the box to at least

one genre

• Put your brainstorm on Canva and answer the

following questions:
• Which genre comes up most often?
• Which one are you interested in
exploring?
• Or has this given you another idea?
Researching your
chosen genre
• Now you need to research your chosen genre
• Eg Fantasy, Horror, Western, Action, Sci Fi, Drama, Period
drama, Comedy, Thriller, Romance, Adventure, War, Noir etc
(or any others you can think of?)

• Research similar products (games or films)

• On your Research page, add screen grabs and links and
identify/describe:
• The codes you can see – visual, audio, technical
• The conventions of this genre
Linking the research
to your idea
• Use your research to help
you produce a moodboard
More info about your moodboard

Film-makers You should consider conventional locations, characters, costumes, props

etc
• Make sure your moodboard gives an idea of your mise-en-scene

Game designers
• You should consider conventional settings, characters, collectables, maps, challenges
• Make sure your moodboard reflects the look and feel of your game

Everyone
• Underneath your moodboard, explain why you have chosen those elements
Well done!

• You’ve made a start on your

final project
• The next step will be to
develop those ideas
further….
