Cultivation of Cocoa seeds
These are the steps taken to cultivate cocoa trees:
• The forest are cleared
• Cocoa seed are grown in nurseries
• The seeds are planted 3-4 meters apart
• They are pruned to become 6 meters tall
Harvesting of cocoa seeds
• The most important season is during the dry season
• i.e. September to January
• The ripe cocoa pods are cut in November and December
• The people who cut the ripe pods are called tumbadors
Processing of Cocoa
• The pods are cut open using a Machete
• Then the beans and the sticky pulp are extracted by hand
• The beans and pulp are left to ferment for 7 days to avoid bitter
taste and to stop seed germination
• Then they are washed and dried in the sun
• And finally they are packed and exported. The final products are
prepared by the companies.
Conclusion
• So, without the long months of hard work done by the people who
work tirelessly on Cocoa farms, you wouldn’t be able to enjoy
chocolates. The people who work on these cocoa farms have never
even gotten to taste chocolate before. So next time you eat a bar
of chocolate, remember to honor the hundreds if not thousand of
people working day and night on these Cocoa farms.
