PROPAGANDA

The more or less systematic use of symbols to attempt to influence the beliefs,
attitudes, or behavior of others is known as propaganda (words, gestures, banners,
monuments, music, clothing, insignia, hairstyles, designs on coins and postage
stamps, and so forth). Propaganda can be distinguished from casual talk or the open
and easy interchange of ideas by deliberateness and a comparatively substantial
emphasis on manipulation. One or more specific objectives are the focus of
propagandists. In order to do these, they carefully choose the arguments, facts, and
symbolism they will use and present them in ways they believe will have the greatest
impact. The reactors (the individuals they are trying to persuade) may be distracted
from everything but the reactors' point of interest in order to maximize effect.
