GREEN ARCHITECTURE
• Sustainable architecture, also known as "Green building"
(or "green architecture"), is a general term that
describes environmentally-conscious design techniques
on the field of architecture. Sustainable architecture is
framed by the larger discussion of sustainability and the
pressing economic and political issues of our world. In
the broad context, sustainable architecture seeks to
minimize the negative environmental impact of buildings
by enhancing efficiency and moderation in the use of
materials, energy, and development space.
THE BASICS :

• 1. SUSTAINABLE ENERGY , Heating, Ventilation

and Cooling System Efficiency Energy
efficiency over the entire life cycle of a
building is the most important single goal of
sustainable architecture. Architects use many
different techniques to reduce the energy
needs of buildings and increase their ability to
capture or generate their own energy.
• 2. BUILDING PLACEMENT - One central and often ignored
aspect of sustainable architecture is building placement.
Although many may envision the ideal environmental home
or office structure as an isolated place in the middle of the
woods, this kind of placement is often detrimental to the
environment. First, such structures often serve as the
unknowing frontlines of suburban sprawl. Second, they
usually increase the energy consumption required for
transportation and lead to unnecessary auto emissions.
Ideally, most building should avoid suburban sprawl in favor of
the kind of light urban development articulated by the New
Urbanist movement. Careful mixed use zoning can make
commercial, residential, and light industrial areas more
accessible for those traveling by foot, bicycle, or public transit.
• 3. SUSTAINABLE BUILDING MATERIALS -
Some examples of sustainable building
materials include recycled denim or blown-in
fiber glass insulation, sustainably harvested
wood, bamboo, which is one of the strongest
and fastest growing woody plants, and non-
toxic low-VOC glues and paints.

Ventilation and Cooling System Efficiency

Elevated Flooring with air space reduces heat build up in the house.
The high-pitch roof allows the hot air during the summer season to
dissipate with the indigenous materials. During the rainy season, the same
roof acts a deflector of rain. To ensure a cool atmosphere, large windows
allow a cross ventilation.
• the bahay kubo concept, the pitched roof,
and deep overhangs and sunshades to protect
the façade from rain and solar heat. They also
have wide windows, big space at the center of
the house for passive cooling, cross-ventilation
and light paths to penetrate the living space.
Building placement - Bahay kubo are designed to be a single-detached
residential unit. With this design, it has ample open space and lot set back
Hedges around the house delfects the strong winds.
The use of indigenous materials, such as bamboo and
woven mat, for ceilings, sidings and structural frames,
makes the house built wit sustainable building
materials.
However, geography and climate, available natural
building materials and local construction skills, could be
also said to be the determining factors of the bahay
kubo. Responding to climate, the most dominant
element of the house is its thick roof of thatch that
insulates the interior from the tropical sun, rain slides
off its steep roof and wide overhangs protect the walls
from water, the floor of bamboo slats conducts air into
the house even if all openings are shut.
