GUATAPÉ ANTIOQUIA
• Guatapé is a municipality of Colombia, located in the east subregion of the
department of Antioquia. It limits to the north with the municipality of
Alejandría and Concepción, to the east with the municipalities of San Rafael
and San Carlos, to the south with the municipalities of Granada and El Peñol
and to the west with El Peñol. The municipality has an area of 76 square
kilometers.
HISTORY
• It was founded on June one, one thousand eight hundred eleven by Francisco
Giraldo Jiménez as the ‘Pueblo de los Zócalos’. It is an area historically
inhabited by indigenous people entrusted by a chief named ‘Guatapé’ and it is
in his honor that the town is named. This municipality, before being the tourist
attraction of today, was characterized by being a cattle rancher, a miner and
fruits such as onion, yucca, corn and banana were grown; typical activities of
the department of Antioquia.
• Another name that the town has had in the past is "La Ceja de Guatapé."

HOW TO GO THERE?
• If you are already in Medellín, you just have to go to the northern transport
terminal, where buses leave directly to Guatapé for a value of 13,500 pesos per
person. The route takes 1 hour and 50 minutes.
