Flora of Sahara
Prominent among the relict woody plants of the Saharan
highlands are species of olive, cypress, and mastic trees. Other
woody plants found in the highlands and elsewhere in the desert
include species of Acacia and Artemisia, doum palm, oleander,
date palm, and thyme.
Fauna of Sahara
Among the mammal species still found in the Sahara are the
gerbil, jerboa, Cape hare, and desert hedgehog; Barbary sheep
and scimitar-horned Oryx; Dorcas gazelle, dama deer, and
Nubian wild ass; Anubis baboon; spotted hyena, common jackal,
and sand fox; and Libyan striped weasel and slender mongoose.
Flora of Ladakh
The genera with the highest number of species in Ladakh
flora are Astragalus (with 35 species), followed by Carex
(28 species), Poa (27 species), Nepeta (24 species),
Corydalis (20 species), Epilobium (18 species), and
Polygonum and Artemisia (17 species each).
Fauna of Ladakh
Other birds include the raven, red-billed chough
(chungka), Tibetan snowcock and chukar (a partridge,
srakpa). The lammergeier and the golden eagle are common
raptors here. Marshes of Ladakh is a good breeding ground
for many migratory birds.
