What is FREEDOM? • It is an intrinsic and essential property of the person. • The ability to make choices and perform actions. • Sets us apart from other beings. • It is rooted in the human person’s self-determination and exercise of intellect and freewill. PRUDENCE- means being careful about your choices (STOP-THINK-ACT) WHEN YOU ARE PRUDENT.. • You are not taking unnecessary risks. • You consider long-term consequences of your actions. • Practical reasoning • Weigh the PROS and CONS KINDS OF FREEDOM • PHYSICAL FREEDOM - refers to the absence of any physical restraints. • PSYCHOLOGICAL FREEDOM - is also called freedom of choice. KINDS OF FREEDOM • MORAL FREEDOM - refers to using freedom in a manner that upholds human dignity and goodness. Two Elements that define Freedom.
• VOLUNTARINESS – refers to the ability of a person
to act out his or her own freewill and determination. Two Elements that define Freedom.
RESPONSIBILITY – refers to the person being
accountable for his or her actions and their consequences. Decisions Consequences Take responsibility • The realization of voluntariness and responsibility in the exercise of our freedom gives our actions and experiences a whole new meaning. • We now can reflect on our actions to better understand them and guide us toward making the best possible decision. We therefore begin to examine our actions, habits, and behavior by asking ourselves the following questions: • What should I do? • Why should I do it? • What will happen if I will do it? • How will my actions or behavior affect myself, others, and my surroundings? • Will my actions or behavior be considered correct, proper, beneficial, and moral? • Human freedom should be exercised with control and a recognition of reasonable limits.
• Freedom should also be exercised with regard for knowledge and
truth.
• We should also recognize and uphold not only our individual freedom but also the freedom of others.
