Sinulog Festival
Background History of sinulog festival

The Sinulog dance is named after the Cebuano word ‘sulog," which means
"like water current movement" and reflects the forward-backward motion of
the dance. The Santo Niño de Cebú, one of the nation's most well-known
historical relics, has been the focus of Sinulog celebrations up to the present.
This was one of the most significant occasions in Philippine religious history
since it helped spread Christianity there.

The celebration of the Sinulog Festival began when Ferdinand Magellan

presented the statue of the Child Jesus to Queen Juana of Cebu as a gift when she
was baptized as a Christian, and it's said to have contributed to the growth of
Christianity in the country. The first Sinulog dance was allegedly performed by
Queen Juana when she received the holy image, dancing joyfully while carrying
the image of the Child Jesus. The other locals imitated her, and this event is
recognized as the beginning of the Sinulog dance. In this procession, everyone is
dancing to the rhythm of the drums to exalt the Holy Child.
History
Long before Magellan, who led a Spanish expedition on April 7,1521
arrived, the locals of Cebu were already dancing the Sinulog in praise of
their animist deities. After introducing Christianity, Magellan did not live
very long.

The Sinulog celebrates the adoption of Christianity by the Filipino people

today. In 1980, the inaugural Sinulog parade took place, and every year
since then, millions of people have gathered in Cebu to celebrate Sinulog,
the first and largest festival in the Philippines. It is also known for its street
celebrations, which typically take place on the evening of and the night of
the main festival.
