To Avoid Engine Over Speed

• Choice the correct gear before down hill


• Use ARC (Automatic Retarder Control)
• Use Manual Retarder to reduce speed at unstable
grade

ARC Procedures

• ARC Switch ON
• Lock Transmission gear
• Truck traveling down hill
• Do not depress Accelerator
• Engine RPM between 1850 - 1950

Down Hill Loaded 17% Grade Use 1 st Gear
Down Hill Loaded 15% Grade Use 2 nd Gear
Down Hill Loaded 13% Grade Use 2 nd Gear

Down Hill Loaded 10% Grade Use 3 rd Gear

Traveling Down Hill
Maintain Engine RPM between 1850 -
1950 for Engine Class 3500

Maintain Engine RPM between 2160 -


2300 for Engine Class 3400

Notes:
•Retarder will active at rear brake of Cat 777 / 773
•Maintain Engine RPM between 1850 - 1950 ( 777 )
to optimum brake oil cooling
•Maintain Engine RPM between 2160 - 2300 ( 773 )
to optimum brake oil cooling
