Course Content:
UNIT I:                                                                                                         
Free electron theory of metals-Drude-Lorentz classical theory(Free electron gas model),
Somerfields quantum theory-free electron gas in 1-D and 3-D .

UNIT II:                                                                                                          


Band theory of solids- The bloch theorem, The Keonig-Penney model. Velocity and effective
mass of electron.
UNIT III:                                                                                                  
Magnetic terminology. Types of Magnetism- dia, para, ferro, antiferro and ferrimagnetism.
Applications of Magnetic Materials.

UNIT IV
Superconductivity: Origin, rtesistivity,perfect diamagnetism or meissner effect. Supercurrents
and penetration depth. Type I and II superconducting materials and their applications.
Thermodynamics and Phase Diagrams (MS501)
UNIT I:                                                                                                   
Entropy. Internal energy. Free energy. Chemical potential. Entropy of mixing. Free energy of ideal and regular solid
solutions. Binary Isomorophous Systems, Free energy-temperature-composition diagrams. Rules for
construction of tie lines. Phase rule, lever rule, Free energy of phase mixture.
 
UNIT II:                                                                                                   
Diffusion in solids. Diffusion mechanism. Steady and non steady state diffusion. Activation energy for diffusion. 
 
UNIT III:                                                                                                      
Phase Transformations: Kinetics of phase transformations. Homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation and growth.
Types of phase diagrams.
UNIT IV: 
Heat treatment of steels and Al-alloys.
Advanced Techniques for Materials Characterization (MCR-501)
Course content
UNIT –I Powder Characterization Techniques
Nature of particles, Particle size and Particle size distribution. Sedimentation, and electrical sensing zone methods of
measurement of particle size and particle size distribution. Surface area and porosity and their measurement techniques.
 
UNIT –II Thermal Analysis
Thermogravimetric (TGA), Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA), and Differential Scanning calorimeter (DSC) with suitable
examples of glass and ceramic materials.

UNIT –III X-ray Diffraction


Basic Crystallography. Atomic and Geometrical structure factors. Factors influencing the intensities of diffracted beams.
Powder X-ray diffractometer. Identification of crystal structure using JCPDS files. Determination of particle size.

UNIT –IV Electron Microscopy


Principle of electron microscopy. Construction and operation of Transmission Electron Microscope and Scanning Electron
Microscope. Mechanism of image formation in SEM.

This course the information of the characterization of the methods used in the characterization of particle in different
form and there image formation using different technique and instruments.
Renewable Energy Technology(CHE-515)
Course content
Principles of renewable energy: Fundamentals, Scientific principles, technical implications, and social implications
 Solar energy :- Solar radiation and its Measurement; Solar collectors types, solar water heating; Limitations and
application of solar energy for crop drying, Solar ponds, air heating; solar concentrators; Types and usage of
photovoltaic systems; photovoltaic power generation using silicon cell

 Wind power :- Principle of energy from wind, wind mill construction and operational details, electricity generation
and mechanical power production.

 Tidal power :- Origin of tides, their energy potential, power generation from tides and limitations of tidal energy,
wave energy, power in waves, wave energy technology, principal of ocean thermal energy conversion analysis

 Hydrogen energy :-Hydrogen energy system and analysis; Hydrogen infrastructure; Safety, codes and standards,
Hydrogen production by Electrolysis; Thermochemical; Hydrogen from fossil fuel; Hydrogen fuel cells and storage
of Hydrogen.  

 Biomass energy :-Bio-fuel classification; Combustion; pyrolysis; gasification and other thermo-chemical processes;
Production of alcohol and biogas; Fundamentals of Bio-diesel; Trans-esterification of vegetable oils for biodiesel
production; Characterization of biodiesel; Economics, current trends and future prospects in usage of biodiesel
On the large extent we have to make our research cost effective and eco-friendly. In order to doing
this I have taken this course.
