Letter of Motivation

While studying high school physics, I was fascinated to learn how the behavior of the materials
changes with heat or inclusion of other materials. Afterwards, driven by the enthusiasm of learning
about materials, I have decided to pursue my bachelor in the discipline of Materials & Metallurgical
Engineering. During my undergraduate study, I was exposed to a broader arena of materials science
and therefore, I have got the opportunity to widen my periphery in this field. At the university, I
was able to blend in the theoretical knowledge of materials synthesis with hands-on experience to
analyses their physical, mechanical and microstructural properties. To deepen my knowledge on
materials synthesis and their effects on properties and applications, I had chosen my
undergraduate thesis on electronics materials. I investigated the Structural Modification of P 2O5
doped Silica. The experiment was carried out with a variation of different parameters. Then it was
observed how the addition of P 2O5 on Silica in different percentages and sintering temperatures
affects the structural changes occurring in silica and causes the lowering in softening temperature.

After completing undergraduate, I have been working as an Engineer in Walton group, Bangladesh
for 2 years. I have accumulated 2 years of industrial experience in co-ordination and Production
planning of Six Production lines of Fastener Project namely Wire Drawing, Annealing Furnace, PPM
(Pickling, Phosphate and Metal Soap), Cold Forming Machines (Multi-stage Bolt and Nut Former,
Screw Heading, Threading, Tapping), Heat Treatment (Hardening and Tempering) and Coating
(Electroplating). I firmly believe this practical experience will help me in further academic studies. I
am looking forward to bridging my metallurgical experience with relevant research work.

After careful consideration I have decided to apply to the program Masters of Science in Material
Science at TU Darmstadt. The key reason for choosing this course is my interest in advanced
functional materials; their structure, synthesis, analysis, and properties. The focus of the program is
also collinear with my undergraduate study and thesis. Graduation in Materials Science has
provided me a strong foundation in understanding of the Advanced Functional Materials, especially
different synthesis and characterization method of novel materials. Through the undergraduate
course “Surface Engineering and Materials Lab”, I have gained hands-on experience in performing
different coating and film growth processes. This course helped me significantly enriching my
understandings in surface science. Additionally, from my undergraduate studies and practical
experiences, I have established a strong affinity for synthesizing and fabricating of thin film and
analyzing them through different characterization techniques i.e. XRD, SEM, EDS, TEM, XRF etc.
Moreover, the tremendous growth of the demand of thin film-based devices has magnetized me to
choose this research area for my higher studied as well as for my future career domain. Moreover, I
have learnt to integrate myself in a team, where I can learn from others and cooperate with each
other to perform a specific goal.
