Study Plan

I am enrolled in MS Nanoscience and Engineering (18-year education) with research in

energy harvesting, generation and storage from National University of Science and
Technology (NUST), Islamabad, Pakistan. Degree is in completion process with research
paper and thesis. I have worked keenly in understanding the possible potentials of the
materials for sustainable energy harvesting. Moreover, I have studied courses related to
materials engineering, applied physics and nanoscience courses according to HEC Pakistan
Policy. I also did research project and currently writing a thesis and research paper on
“Electro-mechanical behavior of Nb- doped ceramic material for energy harvesting
application” under supervision of Dr. Mohsin Saleem (Assistant Professor, SCME NUST,
Islamabad).

The objective of the research is controlled synthesis, characterization and testing of ceramic
materials for energy harvesting applications. Lead based materials have been used in the
areas of filters, resonators, and actuators. However, dangerous, and harmful materials used
for the device manufacturing mean that there is an environmental issue. The outcome of the
research was the development of lead (Pb)-free piezoelectric ceramics with properties that are
the same as PZT. Barium strontium titanate (BST) was found to be a strong alternative to
replace Lead. BST is a ternary ceramic compound with the stoichiometric formula
(BaxSr1−xTiO3). BST is a continuous solid solution containing BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 over the
entire composition range. The solid solution of BST has emerged as a strong candidate
material for such applications. It is well-known that BST has a variety of electronic
applications in multilayer and voltage- tunable capacitors, dynamic random access memories
(DRAM), microwave phase shifters, tunable filters, oscillators, uncooled infrared sensors,
etc. due to the high dielectric constant, nonlinear variation of dielectric constant with the
electric field, ferroelectricity, pyroelectric properties etc. Currently the research is in its final
stage of analysis and writeup. I am also working on research paper (to be submitted) in peer
reviewed internationally recognized journal.

Beside this project, previously I have also worked in the area of Nano-materials for energy
storage and electromagnetic properties and wrote thesis on “Fabrication and
Characterization of Fe3Sn2 nanowires” for BS Degree. A brief overview of the research was
Fe3Sn2 nanowires were fabricated by AC electro-deposition at AC P.D = 15 V, time = 1 min
at room temperature by using template-based synthesis technique. The Fe3Sn2 nanowires of
60 nm to 115 nm are
obtained. Various techniques for the analysis of these nanowires. The structural information
collected by SEM, XRD and FTIR confirms that nanowires of Fe3Sn2 were perfectly
hexagonal in nature.

The consumer electronic market has seen rapid growth in last few decades and currently
pushing towards green energy solutions due to the unwanted negative effects on our
climate/environment. This requires solutions that are less harmful to the environment and are
more efficient in their intended purposes to meet the ever-growing demand. Due to these
reasons it has become sought after area in research. This has developed my interest in field of
renewable energy generation/harvesting and storage to provide the world with better
solutions for green and sustainable ideas for energy generation/harvesting and its storage.
And given my experience in research, I believe that I have enough understanding about
experimental and theoretical work necessary for the synthesis, testing and fabrication in lab-
based environment.

I intend to get admission in your esteemed university in PhD program. My objective is to

continue my research at PhD level in Materials Physics with an emphasis on Energy
generation, storage and, applications (i.e. solar cells, Batteries, sensors, actuators, resonators
etc). My core interest is to continue my PhD and to do research in multi-disciplinary physical
sciences. I feel like my previous research works also has a lot of potential for expansion to be
more oriented towards industry and consumer market. My MS in Nanoscience and
Engineering and BS in Physics has provided me with profound background in applied
sciences. My intentions are to obtain a PhD degree in Material Physics and Chemistry at
Beihang University.

I feel my experience and knowledge in above mentioned areas has given me the motivation,
and desire to continue my formal education leading PhD at Beihang University. This will
help me in excelling my knowledge in a superior way. This would also help me to be familiar
with the internationally available topologies, technologies, and techniques. Further, it will
enable me to utilize my technical and literary knowledge as expressed above to optimize the
existing latest techniques to achieve highest possible efficiencies. The research will
concentrate on the current research gaps in the field of nanotechnology and the recent work
going on to fulfill these gaps by advanced technological approach in the fields of sustainable
Energy generation and storage.

My practical and hands-on experience at graduate and MS level in above cited areas has
given me the motivation and desire to continue my further education leading to PhD to
strengthen
these areas. This would help me to be familiar with the internationally available topologies
and techniques. Further, it will enable me to utilize my technical and literary knowledge to
optimize the existing equipment to achieve highest possible efficiencies. In conclusion, I feel
that I have the theoretical as well as the technical experience that will help me in my desired
area of PhD study.
