in the North East India

➔ Teachers have an important role to play in imparting education
to the students.
Objectives of Teacher Education

Imparting an adequate knowledge of the subject- matter.

Equipping the prospective teachers with necessary pedagogic skills.


Enabling the teacher to acquire understanding of child psychology.

Developing proper attitudes towards teaching


Education in North-East India

Northeast India comprises of a cluster of eight states⎯Arunachal


Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and
Tripura. The region is usually stereotyped as underdeveloped.

Providing basic education of minimum quality to children has been an


obligation of the state since long.
Teacher Education in North East India

Area and population wise analysis shows that Northeast India occupies
7.97% of the area and 3.79% of the total population of India.
In average, around 60% of the teachers at elementary level are untrained.
There are two main reasons
1. Teacher recruitment rules of concerned states
2. Lack of sufficient infra structure for teacher education.

C.T.E are like all other teaching institutions where


one can acquire teaching skills, teaching methods,
teaching techniques and so on .
Role of C.T.E

· Imparting quality pre-service and in-service education to secondary school


teachers.

· Preparing personnel for the faculties of elementary teacher education


institutions.

· Providing general resources support to secondary schools and elementary


teacher education institutions.

· Research, innovation and extension work in the field of secondary


education and elementary teacher education.
Functions

· Organize pre-service teacher education courses for preparation of


secondary teachers.

· Conduct experimentation and innovation in secondary education.

· Provide support to professional bodies.

. Encourage community participation in teacher preparation


programmes
· Provide training and resource support for areas like value-oriented
education, work experience, environment education, information and
communication technology [ICT], science education etc.

· Organize subject-oriented in-service teacher education programmes


for secondary teachers, with a view to making every teacher undergo
at least one subject-oriented training course every 5 years.

DIET is a nodal agency for providing


academic and resource support at the grassroot
level

History

◆ It came into existence with the National Education Policy


(NEP) 1986.

◆ Until then, NCERT, NIEPA and SCERTs used to provide


academic and resource support in the area of elementary
education.

Purpose

◆ A wide area could be brought under the coverage of the education


system and also increase in better support quality.

◆ Child centred approach - Aim is to make education innovative,


satisfying and joyful.

◆ Adult Education programme should be provided to adults in a


participative, learner-active and activity oriented mode.

◆ Target groups are trained and oriented

◆ Elementary and adult education systems are given academic and


resource support in the district.

◆ Action research and experimentation to deal with certain


problems of the district

Introduction to IASE

◆ The term IASE stands for Institute of Advanced


Studies in Education.

◆ Its creation came about as a result of the National


Policy on Education (NPE) 1986.

◆ IASE should be able to improve the quality of teacher


education at the secondary, elementary and primary
level.

◆ Conduct programmes in Elementary Teacher


Education so as to prepare elementary teacher
educators.
◆ Conduct M. Ed., M. Phil, and Ph. D. programmes in
education so as to prepare elementary and secondary
teacher educators and research workers in education.

◆ Conduct in-service courses for : -


(i) elementary and secondary teacher educators
(ii) Principals of secondary schools
(iii) persons involved with supervision of
secondary schools, etc.

◆ Conduct advanced-level fundamental and applied


research and experimentation in education
◆ Conduct training programmes for preparation of
software and use of ICT.

(i) Unit plans or content-cum-methodology
instructional Packages.
(ii) Question Banks
(iii) Teacher’s Hand books, Students’ Work Books,
etc.
(iv) Innovative practices and experimental Projects

IASE IN NORTH EAST

◆ According to the report “Teacher Education in


Northeast India—Status, Weaknesses and
Alternatives” by D. S. Bhattacharjee (2011), North
East has 3 sanctioned IASEs, out of which 2 of them
are in Assam and 1 in Tripura.
