At the end of this module, the learner
is expected to:

✓ be familiar with verbs;


and
✓ use the correct tense of
verb

Lita dances to the music.


Lita danced yesterday.
Lita will dance tomorrow.

Lita is eating her breakfast.


Lita ate her snacks.
Lite will eat later.

Verbs and Tenses
of Verbs
Let’s start with the first set of slides
  A word which denotes action is what we
call a verb. It also shows the condition of a
subject.
Every sentence has a subject and a
predicate. The subject tells what the sentence
is about.
The predicate consists the verb or verb
phrase that tells what the subject does in the
sentence. The subject can be singular or plural
and the verb must agree with its subject in
number. 6
Examples:
Kate donates to the less fortunate.
The children need to stay at home because of
the pouring rain.
 
Notice that the singular subject is paired
with a singular verb and that the plural subject
is paired with a plural verb.
Verbs form also differ according to time.
This is what we call Tenses of Verb which
could denote present, past or future action.

 The simple present tense shows habits,
unchanging or permanent situations, and
general truths. To form the simple present
tense:
1. just use the base form of the verb or
add -es or –s (ex: kiss – kisses, stay –
stays)
2. If the verb ends in a consonant and -
y , change y to i and add –es (ex: try –
tries, fly - flies).

Always remember to check the subject-
verb agreement when using the simple
present tense.

Do not add -es or -s to the verb when


the subject is plural or uses ‘I’ and
‘you’.

Ex: I read a book. – She reads a book.

The following time markers are often used with the
simple present tense:
always every day often
every week every year every month
in the morning/evening
at a specific time/date/day
 
The past form of a verb is used when talking about
things that happened in the past. Last Monday, three
weeks ago, last summer, etc. are time expressions
that can help you determine that the verbs that
happened in the past.

Regular verbs form their past tense by adding - d
or - ed at the base form of the verb.

Examples:
plead – pleaded - She pleaded with her life before
the king.
erase - erased - My classmate erased her answers
on the paper.
play - played - We played basketball last week.
reply - replied - She replied this morning.
shop – shopped - The family shopped for their
household needs

Irregular verbs form their past tense by changing
their spelling. Examples:
think - thought
get - got
know - knew
drink - drank
spend – spent
 
The future tense of the verb denoted that the
action is yet to be done in the future time. The
words shall or will plus the simple form of the
verb are used to show future actions.

1. Use shall with I or we in questions.

Examples: Shall we go on a picnic next


Sunday? / Shall I join you tomorrow?
 
2. Use will in all other sentences.

Examples: We will spend the summer in


Cebu. / I will study my lessons tonight.
