Historical Approach sees literature as both a

reflection and product of the times and

circumstances in which it is written. It doesn’t
mean describing everything the characters see, or
giving a complete history of where the scene
occurs. It is giving enough information to help
readers understand a text better using its history
as background.
 History and literature come
hand in hand because together, they
interpret human experiences and
allow us to know the things that
shape our present time.
Historical criticism (also known as historicism or
higher criticism) refers to the study of literary texts
in terms of their historical origins and development
within those contexts. It is a branch of criticism that
investigates the origins of ancient texts in order to
understand "the world behind the text" including facts
about the author’s life and the historical and social
circumstances of the time.
 The given examples fall under historical
criticism. The goal of historical criticism,
traditionally, has been to try to understand
the text’s meaning in its original context and
to answer questions about the text, such as:
• Who wrote it?
• When was it written?
• What else what happening at the time of its writing?
• How did it come to be in the form we have it today?
• What did it mean to the people who first read or
heard it?
Historical criticism allows the reader to
analyze a text based on its historical
background and social issues or
circumstances that are happening
during the time when the text was
written.
